Biography

Short Description

Saint Aquilinus, also called Aquilinus of Milan and sometimes Aquilinus of Würzburg or of Cologne, is venerated in the Catholic Church as a priest and martyr. Surviving accounts of his life are late and hagiographical rather than documentary. They present him as a native of Würzburg in Franconia, in what is now Germany. No reliable source records the year of his birth. He received ordination as a priest and, according to the legend, declined the bishopric of Cologne, preferring evangelical poverty and itinerant preaching to ecclesiastical dignity.

After leaving his homeland he is described as having studied or sojourned in Paris and as having undertaken pilgrimages, in some versions as far as the Holy Land. He at length took up residence in Milan, a city whose religious life in the early second millennium was marked by tension between the Catholic hierarchy and various dissenting groups. There he preached with zeal. The Roman Martyrology, in its entry for 29 January, remembers him as a priest put to death by the Arians for his defense of the Catholic faith. Later medieval and early modern lives instead set his martyrdom in or about the year 1015 and name the Cathars, or similar heretics, as his killers. Both strands of tradition agree that he was stabbed, often specifying a wound to the neck, and that his corpse was thrown into a sewer or drain from which it was subsequently recovered by the faithful.

The relics of Aquilinus were deposited in the Basilica of San Lorenzo Maggiore, one of the most ancient churches of Milan. They are associated with the octagonal chapel on the south side of the basilica, known as the Cappella di Sant'Aquilino. That structure dates from late antiquity, probably the fourth century, and may originally have been built as an imperial mausoleum; it was later adapted for Christian worship and came to house the saint’s remains and to bear his name. Pilgrims and the local church have honored him there for centuries. His liturgical feast is celebrated on 29 January. No record exists of a formal canonization by a pope; his cult is of the ancient, locally rooted type that the Church later recognized through inclusion in the martyrology.

Because contemporary chronicles and charters are silent about him, the precise historical identity of Priest Aquilinus remains uncertain. Scholars have suggested that the eleventh-century German priest of the later legend may have been conflated with an earlier Milanese martyr, which would explain the martyrology’s reference to Arians. What can be affirmed is the continuity of veneration in Milan, the physical focus of the chapel at San Lorenzo, and the Church’s commemoration of Aquilinus as a priest who died for the faith. He is not known to have married, to have had children, or to have held the offices of pope or patriarch. Details of any particular patronage—whether of places, trades, or causes—are not securely attested in the principal historical sources.
