Biography

Short Description

Priest Caecilius, also called Caecilianus in some manuscripts, was a Christian presbyter of the church of Carthage in the Roman province of Africa during the mid-third century. Virtually all that is known of him comes from the Vita Cypriani composed shortly after 258 by Pontius the Deacon, a cleric who had served under Cyprian, and from brief later notices in Jerome’s De viris illustribus and other Latin ecclesiastical writers. These sources present Caecilius as the spiritual father of Thascius Cyprianus, the distinguished rhetorician who became bishop of Carthage and one of the principal Latin Fathers. After his baptism Cyprian adopted Caecilius’s name, and he is therefore known in the tradition as Caecilius Cyprianus.

According to Pontius, Caecilius was already a priest of mature age and established reputation when he undertook the instruction of Cyprian, then a wealthy pagan of high social standing. The conversion is customarily dated to the middle of the 240s. Cyprian thereafter regarded Caecilius with filial devotion, considering him the true parent of his Christian life. The episode is one of the better-documented examples of adult conversion among the African elite in the generation before the Decian persecution. It also shows the continuing importance of personal sponsorship and the catechumenate in third-century North African Christianity.

Pontius further records that Caecilius was married and the father of children. When the priest died, he entrusted his wife and offspring to Cyprian’s care; the newly prominent convert (and later bishop) accepted the charge. The notice is historically valuable because it attests the presence of a married presbyter with a family in the Carthaginian clergy at a date when some Christian writers were already praising clerical continence, yet when a universal law of celibacy had not been imposed in the West. No contemporary source gives Caecilius’s birthplace, the names of his wife or children, or the precise year of his death. He does not appear among the African martyrs of 250–258, which suggests that he may have died a natural death before or at the beginning of the Decian crisis.

Beyond his role in Cyprian’s conversion, Caecilius left no extant writings and is not the subject of an independent hagiographical cycle. Later tradition sometimes refers to him as “Saint Caecilius,” but he lacks a universally observed feast day in the major Western martyrologies and was never the object of a widespread public cult. His historical significance therefore remains tightly bound to the biography of Cyprian: he stands as the otherwise obscure priest whose instruction and example helped form one of the most influential bishops of the third-century Latin church.
