Biography

Short Description

Saint Emilian, known in Latin as Aemilianus and in Spanish as San Millán, was a priest and hermit of the Rioja region in Visigothic Hispania. The principal source for his life is the Latin Vita Sancti Aemiliani written in the mid-seventh century by Braulio, bishop of Zaragoza, at the request of Braulio’s brother Fronimian, who served as abbot at the saint’s tomb. According to that account, Emilian passed his youth as a shepherd in the countryside around Berceo. After a conversion he placed himself under the instruction of a hermit named Felix at the fortress of Bilibio, near the Ebro. He then withdrew into the mountains and lived for many years as a recluse. Didymus, bishop of Tarazona, later called him from solitude, ordained him priest, and entrusted him with the church of Berceo.

Emilian’s priesthood was marked by an unsparing generosity toward the poor. He is said to have given away not only his own goods but resources of the church, which provoked accusations from fellow clergy that he was wasting ecclesiastical property. Removed from his parish, he returned to the wilderness and settled at the remote site later known as San Millán de Suso, in the Cogolla mountains. There he resumed an eremitical life of prayer, fasting, and labor. Braulio’s Life attributes to him healings, exorcisms, and the conversion of notorious sinners, and describes him as dying at an advanced age in the company of disciples. His grave at Suso became a shrine. A monastic community gathered around it; in subsequent centuries the lower monastery of San Millán de Yuso was founded in the valley, and the double house of San Millán de la Cogolla became one of the chief religious centers of medieval Navarre and Castile.

The cult of Emilian spread widely in northern Spain. In the thirteenth century the Riojan poet Gonzalo de Berceo recast Braulio’s Vita in Castilian verse, the Vida de San Millán de la Cogolla, which helped fix the saint in vernacular memory. Later Castilian tradition added military legends, including an apparition of Emilian as a warrior at the battle of Simancas in the tenth century, modeled on the better-known legends of Saint James. Such stories belong to medieval patriotic hagiography rather than to the seventh-century source. His feast is observed on 12 November. He was venerated as patron of Castile; in the early seventeenth century he was briefly promoted as co-patron of Spain together with the apostle James, a claim that was contested and not lastingly established for the whole monarchy. He is not recorded as the husband or father of anyone; the sources present him as a celibate ascetic. He never held the see of Rome or any patriarchal office, nor did he belong to a later religious order, though Benedictine monks eventually staffed the monasteries at his shrine.

Braulio’s Life, composed within living memory of Emilian’s disciples, is unusually sober for early medieval hagiography, even while it treats miracles as proof of sanctity. It situates the saint in a rural Visigothic church in which hermits, parish priests, and bishops could come into conflict over property and pastoral style. Precise years of birth and death are not given in the earliest texts. Later tradition assigned him a very long life stretching from the later fifth century to about 574, but those figures are conventional rather than documented. The historical person belongs to the sixth century in the upper Ebro valley.

The monasteries of San Millán de la Cogolla preserved his relics and became important scriptoria. Tenth-century glosses added to Latin manuscripts there, the Glosas Emilianenses, are fundamental documents for the early history of written Romance in Spain and also contain early Basque notes. In art Emilian appears sometimes as an aged hermit and, under the influence of the later military legends, sometimes as a mounted knight. His cult has remained essentially Iberian, centered on La Rioja and Castile, rather than a universal devotion attached to a long list of specialized patronages.
