Biography

Short Description

Saint Glycerius is recorded in the Roman Martyrology as a priest who suffered martyrdom at Nicomedia during the persecution of Christians under the emperor Diocletian. Beyond that brief official notice, almost nothing of his life, family, origins, or the precise circumstances of his death has been preserved in surviving historical or hagiographical sources. He belongs to the large number of Bithynian clergy whose names entered the ancient martyrologies because they perished in the first and most intense phase of the Great Persecution, which began in Nicomedia itself. No year of birth is known, and no reliable source supplies an exact year of death.

Nicomedia, on the eastern shore of the Propontis in the Roman province of Bithynia, served as Diocletian’s principal eastern residence and as one of the administrative capitals of the tetrarchy. In the early fourth century the imperial church there was demolished and edicts were issued ordering the destruction of churches, the burning of the Christian scriptures, and the removal of Christians from positions of honor. Later edicts targeted the clergy in particular, requiring their arrest and compelling them to sacrifice to the gods. Bishop Anthimus of Nicomedia and many members of his clergy were put to death in the months that followed. The martyrological entry for Glycerius places him among those priests of the Nicomedian church who refused to comply and were executed, but it supplies no narrative of interrogation, torture, or the manner of his death.

No trustworthy source records the names of his parents, his place of origin, or whether he was a native of Nicomedia or had come there from elsewhere in Asia Minor. No ancient passio or acta devoted specifically to him is known to have survived. Later medieval compilations and local calendars simply repeat the martyrology’s short clause. Because of this silence it is not possible to reconstruct his pastoral work, his theological formation, or any miracles later attributed to him with historical confidence. He is therefore known to the Church almost exclusively as a name attached to the priestly order and to the city of Nicomedia in the age of Diocletian.

The Latin Church commemorates him on 20 December. The notice was already present in early medieval recensions of the martyrological tradition and was retained in the Roman Martyrology as revised in the sixteenth century and afterwards. There is no evidence of a widespread medieval cult, of a dedicated basilica, or of a translation of relics that can be verified from independent documents. He was never the subject of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval or modern type; his cult rests on the ancient practice of honoring those whose martyrdom had been recorded in the official lists of the Church. No particular patronage of places, professions, illnesses, or social groups is securely attached to his name in the liturgical or popular tradition.

In the judgment of cautious hagiography, Priest Glycerius stands as a representative figure of the Nicomedian clergy who died in the Great Persecution rather than as a saint whose individual biography can be written in detail. The few facts that can be affirmed—that he was a priest, that he was put to death at Nicomedia, and that the Roman Church has remembered him on 20 December—are those given by the martyrological tradition itself. All else remains unknown.
