Biography

Short Description

Saint Hermolaus (also Hermolaos) was a Christian priest of Nicomedia, the imperial residence in Bithynia in northwestern Asia Minor, in the late third and early fourth centuries. He is venerated in both Eastern and Western Christianity as a hieromartyr—a priest put to death for the faith. Virtually everything recorded of him comes from the Greek and Latin passions of Saint Pantaleon (Panteleimon), a court physician whose conversion Hermolaus is said to have brought about. Those narratives, which took their surviving shape well after the events they describe, place him in Nicomedia at the outbreak of the Great Persecution under Diocletian and Galerius, conventionally dated from 303. No contemporary non-hagiographical writer, including Eusebius of Caesarea in his account of the Nicomedian persecutions, names Hermolaus, so his biography cannot be confirmed independently of later legendary acts.

According to that hagiographical tradition, Hermolaus had gone into concealment when the imperial edicts against Christians were enforced in the city. He encountered Pantaleon, a young pagan of distinguished family who served as physician to the emperor, and gradually instructed him in Christian doctrine. After Pantaleon had witnessed what the texts present as a miraculous healing accomplished in Christ’s name, Hermolaus baptized him. Pantaleon thereafter practiced medicine without fee and openly professed Christianity, which led to his arrest. Under interrogation he named Hermolaus as his teacher and baptizer.

Hermolaus was then seized, together with two companions named Hermippus and Hermocrates, whom later tradition sometimes calls his brothers or fellow priests. Brought before the authorities, the three refused to sacrifice to the gods. The passions relate that they were tortured and finally beheaded. The martyrdom is customarily assigned to the year 305, still within the first years of the Diocletianic persecution and while Nicomedia remained a principal imperial seat. The acts often name the emperor Maximian, though historically Diocletian and Galerius directed affairs at Nicomedia; such imperial confusion is typical of later martyr passions and does not supply an independent chronology.

Veneration of Hermolaus as a priest-martyr is ancient. The Eastern Orthodox Church commemorates Hieromartyr Hermolaus and the martyrs Hermippus and Hermocrates on 26 July, the day before the feast of the Great Martyr Panteleimon. The Roman Martyrology records him on 27 July, in conjunction with Pantaleon. He belongs to the pre-congregational period of the Church: no medieval or modern process of formal canonization by a named pope applies. Specific patronages attached to Hermolaus himself are not securely documented in the major martyrologies or liturgical books. His relics and the later diffusion of his cult are poorly attested in early sources; later menologia and synaxaria simply repeat the outline of the Pantaleon legend. For the historian, Hermolaus remains a figure whose existence as a Nicomedian priest-martyr of the Great Persecution is traditional and plausible, but whose life cannot be reconstructed apart from a hagiographical cycle of uncertain date and legendary character.
