Biography

Short Description

Saint Pammachius was a member of the Roman senatorial aristocracy in the later fourth century, belonging to the ancient gens Furia. He was educated in Rome, where he became a schoolfellow and lifelong friend of Eusebius Hieronymus, later known as Saint Jerome. That friendship endured after Jerome left Italy for the East and is unusually well documented in the letters and prefaces Jerome addressed to him. Pammachius lived as a Christian senator in the city. He married Paulina, the second daughter of the wealthy Roman widow Saint Paula, a disciple of Jerome and foundress of monastic houses at Bethlehem. The marriage joined two of the most prominent Christian families of the Roman nobility in the generation after the conversion of the imperial house.

Paulina died in 397. Jerome’s long consolatory letter to Pammachius (Letter 66) is a principal source for both spouses and for the change that followed. Pammachius then embraced ascetic discipline and large-scale charity, distributing much of his fortune to the poor while remaining in Rome rather than withdrawing to a desert monastery. The Roman Martyrology, relying on Jerome’s testimony, commemorates him as a priest (presbyter) and praises his piety, learning, and charity. No surviving contemporary narrative records the date of his ordination, but the Roman liturgical tradition consistently styles him a priest.

He founded a xenodochium, a hospice for poor pilgrims and the sick, at Portus, the harbour of Rome near Ostia, one of the earliest such houses connected with the Roman Church. He is also associated with the titulus that bore his name on the Caelian Hill, the church that became the Basilica of Saints John and Paul; early Roman documents call the title titulus Pammachii, and later tradition presents him as its founder or chief patron. He remained an active correspondent of Jerome, receiving copies of controversial works such as the treatise against Jovinian. When that work’s severe language on marriage caused offence in Rome, Pammachius asked for a more measured explanation, which produced further letters. He tried to mediate in the Origenist quarrel between Jerome and Rufinus of Aquileia, writing to both in hope of peace, and he also corresponded with Augustine of Hippo.

Pammachius died in Rome in or about 410, as the Western Empire entered the crisis of the Visigothic invasion and the sack of the city. The exact circumstances of his death and the place of his burial are not recorded in contemporary narrative sources. Veneration of him as a saint is ancient; his name stands in the Roman Martyrology on 30 August. The chief witnesses to his life remain Jerome’s letters, which portray a Roman aristocrat who, after bereavement, devoted rank, learning, and remaining wealth to the poor and to the peace of the Church.
