Biography

Short Description

The label “Priest Pastor” does not identify a single, securely documented person in the historical or hagiographical record. No Wikidata item, encyclopedia article, see, century, or feast was supplied, and the combination of office and name is too common and too vague to assign a verified birth year, death year, birthplace, burial, order, family, or patronage. Several early Christian figures were called Pastor (Latin for “shepherd”); at least one appears in Roman tradition as a priest. They must not be merged into one biography, and none of them can be given precise vital dates from contemporary evidence.

The priest most often attached to this name belongs to later Roman legend rather than to first-hand documentation. Tradition drawing on the Liber Pontificalis and on the legendary Acts of Saints Pudentiana and Praxedes speaks of a priest Pastor in the city of Rome, sometimes said to have been a brother of Pope Pius I in the second century. He is linked to a titular church, the titulus Pastoris, which later writers identified with Santa Pudenziana on the Esquiline. Those Acts are generally dated by modern scholarship to the fifth or sixth century; they are internally inconsistent and are not corroborated by second-century sources. No reliable year of birth, year of death, or place of origin can be established for this Pastor, nor can a burial site or a formal canonization process be verified.

A different and better-attested saint named Pastor is one of the child martyrs Justus and Pastor of Complutum (Alcalá de Henares) in Hispania, remembered as having been killed in the Diocletianic persecution in the early fourth century. They are described as schoolboys, not as clergy; treating that Pastor as a priest would be a confusion of identity. Brief martyrological notices of other men named Pastor exist in local calendars, usually without independent lives. None of these entries yields a verified birth year, and none can be shown to be the intended subject here.

Because the person cannot be matched to one documented life, fields that require a confirmed birth year, death year, cities, burial, religious order, spouse, children, papal or patriarchal office, feast day, patronage, or named canonizer or beatifier are left blank. “Pastor” was used as a personal name among Latin-speaking Christians, and a priest of that name figures in the legendary history of a Roman titular church; the historical kernel, if any, cannot be recovered from the sources that survive. No office-taking year has been substituted for a birth year.
