Biography

Short Description

Polycarp of Smyrna was a Christian bishop of the second century, numbered among the Apostolic Fathers, and is the figure most commonly intended by the name Polycarp in hagiographical tradition. The principal ancient witnesses to his life are the Letter of Polycarp to the Philippians, the Martyrdom of Polycarp (a letter of the church of Smyrna describing his death), and the notices of Irenaeus of Lyons, who as a young man in Asia had heard Polycarp teach. Irenaeus states that Polycarp had been a companion of apostles, had conversed with many who had seen Christ, and had been installed as bishop of the church in Smyrna by apostles. Tertullian and later Eusebius of Caesarea repeat related traditions linking him with the apostle John. No contemporary source records a birthplace or an exact year of birth. The Martyrdom quotes Polycarp as saying, at the time of his execution, that he had served Christ eighty-six years; historians differ on whether that number represents his age or the length of time since his baptism, and they also differ on the year of the martyrdom itself, with proposals clustering in the mid-150s and, following Eusebius, in the 160s. Because of these uncertainties, neither a birth year nor a death year can be stated as a verified fact.

Polycarp’s only surviving work is the letter to the Philippians, written in Greek, which exhorts the community to righteousness, warns against the love of money, and quotes or closely echoes a range of New Testament writings, including the letters of Paul and 1 Peter. Irenaeus reports that Polycarp traveled to Rome during the episcopate of Anicetus to confer about the dating of Easter. The two did not reach a uniform practice—Polycarp representing the Asian Quartodeciman custom—but they remained in communion and Anicetus is said to have allowed Polycarp to celebrate the Eucharist in Rome. Irenaeus also records Polycarp’s public opposition to Marcion and to Valentinian teachers, including an encounter in which Polycarp is said to have called Marcion the firstborn of Satan. These episodes, if accepted, place him among the important second-century defenders of what Irenaeus regarded as apostolic teaching in Asia Minor.

The Martyrdom of Polycarp, generally dated by scholars to the later second century as a literary composition though based on earlier memory, narrates a persecution at Smyrna in which Polycarp was sought out as the leading Christian. After withdrawing briefly to a farm, he was arrested, brought into the city, and taken to the stadium. There he refused to swear by the fortune or genius of the emperor and to revile Christ, saying he had served Christ eighty-six years and would not now blaspheme his king. The proconsul, named in the text as Statius Quadratus, threatened him with wild beasts and fire. Polycarp was then bound and burned; when the fire did not have the expected effect, an executioner stabbed him. The Smyrnaean Christians collected his remains and buried them, resolving to gather at the place annually. The death is thus firmly associated with Smyrna, the city whose church he had led, in the Roman province of Asia (the region of modern İzmir, Turkey). The precise spot of burial is not independently verified beyond that local tradition.

Polycarp was a bishop, not the bishop of Rome and not a patriarch of one of the later patriarchal sees. He belonged to no later religious order; organized monastic orders did not yet exist in his time. Ancient sources do not record a wife or children, nor do they explicitly assert lifelong celibacy, so those matters remain unknown. Veneration of Polycarp as a martyr is already implied by the Martyrdom itself and by Irenaeus; he was not the subject of a medieval or modern process of beatification or canonization by a named pope. His feast is observed on 23 February in the Roman Martyrology and in the Byzantine calendar. In some Western lists of patrons he is invoked against earache and against dysentery. The historical record, though richer than for many second-century figures, still leaves his birth, the exact year of his death, and most personal details unconfirmed.
