Biography

Short Description

Priest Zenobius is an early Christian martyr of the third century, commemorated together with his sister Zenobia. The principal notices of his life come from the Roman Martyrology and the Byzantine synaxaria rather than from contemporary historical documents. According to this tradition, Zenobius and Zenobia belonged to a wealthy Christian family of the city of Aegea (also spelled Aegae or Aigai) in Cilicia, a port on the southeastern coast of Asia Minor within the Roman Empire. They were raised from childhood in the Christian faith. Upon coming of age they are said to have given away their inheritance to the poor and to have adopted a life of chastity, prayer, and works of mercy.

The same accounts describe Zenobius as a physician who received a charismatic gift of healing. He treated the sick without charge, combining ordinary medical care with prayer. In the Latin martyrological tradition he is styled a priest. Eastern sources often add that he was later consecrated bishop of Aegea, but that episcopal title is absent from the Roman Martyrology, which remembers him simply as a priest. His sister Zenobia shared his household and his charitable work. No reliable source records a marriage or children; the hagiography presents both siblings as unmarried and dedicated to ascetic charity.

Their death is placed in the reign of the emperor Diocletian. Eastern liturgical books commonly give the year 285, though a contemporary record of any trial does not survive and the precise year cannot be independently confirmed. The legendary passio states that a provincial governor required them to sacrifice to the gods, that they refused, and that after torture they were beheaded at Aegea. Other Christians of the city are said to have been put to death in the same persecution. Because the narrative belongs to the genre of late antique martyr acts, the name of the magistrate and the details of the torments cannot be verified from independent evidence.

Veneration of Zenobius and Zenobia is attested by their entry in the Hieronymian Martyrology and by their feast on 30 October in both the Roman Martyrology and the Byzantine calendar. In the East they are often called hieromartyrs on account of Zenobius’s priesthood or reported episcopate. No religious order is associated with them, and no historically secure burial place or later translation of relics can be confirmed from early sources. Their cult remains that of local Cilician martyrs who were received into the general calendars of East and West. Modern historical study can affirm only that a priest named Zenobius and a woman named Zenobia were honored as martyrs of Aegea in Cilicia from a relatively early date, while the biographical particulars rest on later hagiographical tradition.
