Biography

Short Description

Princess Maria Clotilde of Savoy was born Ludovica Teresa Maria Clotilde on 2 March 1843 at the Royal Palace of Turin, in the Kingdom of Sardinia. She was the eldest daughter of Victor Emmanuel, then King of Sardinia and later first King of a unified Italy, and of Archduchess Adelaide of Austria. She was raised at the Savoy court during the Risorgimento and received a strictly Catholic education that marked her character for the rest of her life. Her siblings included the future King Umberto I of Italy and Amadeo, who later reigned briefly as King of Spain.

In January 1859, at the age of fifteen, she was married in Turin to Prince Napoléon Joseph Charles Paul Bonaparte, a cousin of Emperor Napoleon III and a leading Bonapartist, popularly known as Plon-Plon. The match was a diplomatic instrument of the 1858 Plombières understandings between Camillo Cavour and Napoleon III, intended to bind the House of Savoy to the French Empire on the eve of war with Austria. The marriage was unhappy. Maria Clotilde was devout, reserved, and attached to traditional piety, while her husband was worldly, anticlerical, and politically ambitious. During the Second Empire the couple lived principally in France and had three children: Napoléon Victor Jérôme Frédéric (born 1862), later head of the Bonaparte family; Napoléon Louis Joseph Jérôme (born 1864); and Marie Laetitia Bonaparte (born 1866), who married Amadeo, Duke of Aosta.

After the fall of the Second French Empire in 1870, Maria Clotilde left France and returned to Piedmont. She thereafter lived mainly at the Castle of Moncalieri near Turin, keeping a household separate from that of her husband, who remained politically active until his death in 1891. In her later decades she devoted herself to prayer, charity, and a life of personal austerity that led contemporaries to call her, unofficially, the saint of Moncalieri. She remained a laywoman of the royal house and did not enter a religious order, though she stayed closely tied to Catholic circles and to the Savoy court.

She died at Moncalieri on 25 June 1911 and was buried in the Basilica of Superga overlooking Turin, the traditional pantheon of the House of Savoy. Popular reputation for holiness attached to her memory, but she has not been beatified or canonized by the Catholic Church.
