Biography

Short Description

Saint Privatus (French: Privat), bishop of the Gabali, is the principal early martyr associated with the later diocese of Mende in the Gévaudan, in what is now the department of Lozère in southern France. Almost nothing can be established about his birth, family, or early life; no contemporary inscription or document names him, and the year of his birth is unknown. The earliest substantial notice is that of Gregory of Tours in the sixth century, who presents Privatus as bishop of the Gabalian city (the civitas of the Gabali, whose ancient centre was Gabalum, modern Javols) and as a martyr of the third century. Later medieval lives composed in the diocese of Mende add legendary details that cannot be verified from Gregory or from any other early source.

Gregory relates that during an invasion of Gaul by the Alemanni under a leader named Chrocus, Privatus was found in a cave on Mount Mimat (Mont Mimat), where he had withdrawn to fast and pray while his people took refuge in a nearby stronghold. The invaders seized him and tried to force him to sacrifice to their gods. When he refused, they beat him with sticks; Gregory states that he lived two days after the torture and then died. Gregory places the episode in the third century. Later tradition commonly associates the martyrdom with the mid-third century, often around the time of the great Alemannic and other barbarian raids on Gaul circa 260, but Gregory himself gives no year, and modern historians treat both the figure of Chrocus and the exact chronology as uncertain. The cave on Mount Mimat overlooks the site of the later city of Mende; the episcopal see of the Gabali was in time transferred from Javols to Mende, and the martyr’s memory became tightly bound to that town.

Medieval hagiography in the Gévaudan portrayed Privatus as a disciple of Saint Austremonius, the legendary evangelizer of Auvergne, and as a hermit who preached among the Gabali before being made bishop. In this telling, the cave was both hermitage and place of passion, and the people hidden in the fortress were spared because of his constancy. These elaborations shaped local devotion but rest on sources far later than Gregory. A church, and subsequently the cathedral of Mende, was dedicated to him; it is now known as the Cathedral of Notre-Dame-et-Saint-Privat. His relics were venerated there, and a hermitage at the cave on Mont Mimat also became a place of pilgrimage. He is the historic patron of Mende and of the Gévaudan. No extensive additional list of patronages (professions, illnesses, or other places) is securely documented in the early evidence.

The Roman Martyrology commemorates Saint Privatus, bishop and martyr, at Mende on 21 August. His cult remained strongly regional rather than universal. He was not the subject of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval or modern type; his status as a saint rests on ancient local veneration and on inclusion in martyrologies. Beyond Gregory’s brief narrative and the later liturgical and legendary tradition of Mende, the historical Privatus remains an obscure third-century Gallic bishop whose passion was remembered in the Gévaudan and attached, in cult and topography, to Mount Mimat and to the cathedral city that grew at its foot.
