Biography

Short Description

Malachi is the conventional name of the otherwise anonymous prophet whose oracles form the Book of Malachi, the last book of the Twelve Minor Prophets in the Hebrew Bible and the Christian Old Testament. The Hebrew name Mal'akhi means "my messenger." Because the superscription of the book reads "The oracle of the word of the Lord to Israel by Malachi," some ancient and modern interpreters have treated the word as a title rather than a personal name. Rabbinic literature occasionally identified the prophet with Ezra the Scribe or with other post-exilic figures, but these identifications rest on later tradition rather than contemporary evidence and cannot be historically verified. No parentage, tribe, or place of origin is given in the biblical text itself.

Scholarly consensus places the prophetic activity reflected in the book in the Persian period after the return from Babylonian exile, most often in the fifth century BCE. The oracles presuppose a rebuilt Temple, an established priesthood, a Persian-appointed governor, and a community struggling with tithes, mixed marriages, and social injustice—conditions that correspond to the era of Ezra and Nehemiah. The prophet rebukes priests for offering polluted sacrifices, condemns the people for robbing God by withholding tithes, and denounces men who deal treacherously with the wives of their youth. He also announces that the Lord will send a messenger to prepare the way, a text later read in Christian tradition as a prophecy of John the Baptist, and he looks forward to a coming day of the Lord that will refine the priesthood and distinguish those who fear God from the arrogant.

Almost nothing can be established about Malachi's personal life. No reliable historical source records his year of birth or death, his city of origin, his family, or his place of burial. Legendary notices found in later works such as the Lives of the Prophets are not regarded as historically trustworthy. In Christian tradition he is venerated as a saint and prophet. The Eastern Orthodox Church commemorates the Holy Prophet Malachi on 3 January. He held no ecclesiastical office comparable to pope or patriarch, belonged to no religious order, and left no documented record of marriage or children.

The Book of Malachi, though brief, occupies a structurally important place as the closing voice of the prophetic canon in the Hebrew Bible. Its themes of covenant fidelity, the purification of worship, and eschatological hope have been read across Jewish and Christian communities for more than two millennia. In Christian lectionaries and theology the book's messenger passages and its vision of the day of the Lord have been especially influential. Beyond the text that bears his name, however, the historical individual remains obscure, and responsible biography must acknowledge the limits of the evidence.
