Biography

Short Description

The prophetess Anna (also rendered Hannah) is known solely from a brief notice in the Gospel of Luke (2:36–38), set at the Presentation of Jesus in the Jerusalem Temple. Luke identifies her as the daughter of Phanuel and a member of the tribe of Asher, one of the northern tribes of Israel. He calls her a prophetess and describes her as of great age. She had lived with her husband for seven years after her marriage and thereafter as a widow. The Greek phrasing is ambiguous: it may mean that she was eighty-four years old at the time of the episode, or that she had been a widow for eighty-four years. In either reading she is an elderly woman of long-tested piety. No extra-biblical contemporary source records her birth, parentage beyond Phanuel, or the name of her husband, and no verified year of birth or death can be assigned.

Luke states that she never left the Temple but worshipped there with fasting and prayer night and day. The portrait places her among devout Jews who maintained a continual presence in the Temple precincts in Jerusalem during the late Second Temple period, under Herodian rule and Roman overlordship in the early first century. When Mary and Joseph brought the infant Jesus to the Temple in accordance with the Law of Moses—for the mother’s purification and the presentation of the firstborn—Anna came forward at that moment. She gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem. Together with the aged Simeon, who had just uttered the Nunc dimittis, she functions in the narrative as a prophetic witness from within Israel to the Messiah.

Her tribal identity is historically noteworthy. Asher’s ancestral territory lay in the north; after the Assyrian exile of the eighth century BCE, members of the northern tribes are seldom named in Judean sources. Luke’s mention of an Asherite prophetess in Jerusalem therefore underscores, within the evangelist’s theology, the gathering of all Israel around the infant Christ. Beyond that Lucan notice, historians have no independent evidence for her later life, death, or burial. Later Christian tradition, especially in the East, commemorated her with Simeon. In the Byzantine rite their feast is kept on 3 February, the day after the Meeting of the Lord (the Presentation). The Roman Martyrology likewise remembers Anna the prophetess on 3 February. In Christian art she appears almost exclusively in Presentation scenes, typically as an elderly woman, sometimes with a scroll, gesturing toward the child.

Anna’s place in Christian memory is that of a female prophetic voice at the threshold of the Gospel, a representative of faithful, waiting Israel, and a model of persevering prayer and widowhood. She was venerated from early Christian times as a biblical saint rather than by a later formal process of canonization. Claims of precise birth or death years, a named spouse, children, or a burial site are not supported by the Gospel or by other reliable ancient sources; what can be said with confidence remains the Lucan description of an aged Asherite prophetess in Jerusalem who recognized and proclaimed the child Jesus.
