Biography

Short Description

Jerzy Popiełuszko was born on 14 September 1947 in the village of Okopy near Suchowola in northeastern Poland, then part of the Białystok Voivodeship of the Polish People's Republic. He was the son of farmers Władysław and Marianna Popiełuszko and was raised in a devoutly Catholic rural household. After secondary school he entered the Warsaw seminary in 1965. His formation was interrupted by compulsory military service from 1966 to 1968, during which he was harassed for his faith, a common experience for seminarians under the communist authorities. He was ordained a priest on 28 May 1972 by Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński, Primate of Poland, and thereafter served as a diocesan priest of the Archdiocese of Warsaw rather than as a member of a religious order.

In the years after ordination he worked in several Warsaw parishes and as a chaplain to medical students and nurses. In 1980 he was assigned to St. Stanislaus Kostka Church in the Żoliborz district of Warsaw, the same year the Solidarity trade union emerged from the Gdańsk shipyard strikes. Popiełuszko became a pastoral supporter of Solidarity workers, celebrating Masses for striking steelworkers and others. After the imposition of martial law on 13 December 1981 he continued to preach at monthly Masses for the Homeland that drew thousands and were circulated throughout Poland on cassette tapes. His sermons condemned violence, falsehood, and the regime's abuses while insisting on nonviolence, truth, and human dignity; he presented this as an evangelical rather than a party-political message, yet he became one of the most visible clerical voices of the opposition.

The Security Service subjected him to surveillance, harassment, and fabricated accusations. An attempt was made on his life in 1982 when explosives were placed in his car. On the night of 19 October 1984, returning from a pastoral visit in Bydgoszcz, he was kidnapped near Górsk, close to Toruń, by three Security Service officers, Grzegorz Piotrowski, Leszek Pękala, and Waldemar Chmielewski. He was beaten, bound, and murdered; his weighted body was thrown into the Vistula Water Reservoir near Włocławek and was recovered on 30 October 1984. The killing provoked nationwide outrage. His funeral at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church on 3 November 1984 drew hundreds of thousands of mourners and became a major public demonstration against the regime. The three perpetrators and their superior, Adam Pietruszka, were convicted in a 1985 trial, though their sentences were later reduced.

Popiełuszko was widely regarded as a martyr for the faith and for human freedom under communist rule. The cause for his beatification proceeded on the grounds of martyrdom, and he was beatified on 6 June 2010 in Warsaw's Piłsudski Square before a very large crowd; Cardinal Angelo Amato, prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, presided as representative of Pope Benedict XVI. He has not been canonized. His tomb at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church in Warsaw remains a major pilgrimage site. His liturgical memorial is kept on 19 October. He is remembered especially as chaplain and martyr associated with Solidarity and as a symbol of peaceful Catholic resistance to late-twentieth-century totalitarianism in Poland.
