Short Description

Zwentibold, also rendered Zwentibald or Swentibold in various medieval sources, was a late Carolingian ruler of the ninth century and the illegitimate son of Arnulf of Carinthia, king of East Francia and, from 896, emperor. His mother is not identified in the surviving chronicles. Although born out of wedlock, he was acknowledged by his father and raised within the royal household at a time when the Carolingian realms were under pressure from internal aristocratic factions and from external attacks. Contemporary and near-contemporary writers, above all Regino of Prüm, provide the principal narrative of his career. Modern historians generally place his birth in the earlier 870s, but no exact year is recorded.

In 895 Arnulf, responding to a request from the Lotharingian magnates for a king of their own, had Zwentibold anointed and installed as king of Lotharingia, the middle Frankish kingdom whose lands stretched from the North Sea coast through the Meuse and Moselle valleys. The grant was made at a royal assembly commonly located at Worms. Zwentibold’s short reign was marked by conflict with the high nobility. He sought to uphold royal and ecclesiastical rights and is described as taking the part of churches and of lesser freemen against the great counts, a policy that isolated him from leading families of the region, including the Matfridings and the house of Reginar.

Around 897 Zwentibold married Oda, daughter of Otto the Illustrious, duke of Saxony. The alliance tied him to the Liudolfing house, which would later produce the Ottonian kings. Later medieval tradition associated three daughters—often named Benedetta, Cecilia, and Relindis—with this marriage; they are said to have lived as religious women at Susteren. Zwentibold himself was a notable benefactor of monastic houses. He is closely linked with the abbey of Susteren on the Meuse, to which he granted protection and where his memory was afterwards preserved.

The death of Emperor Arnulf in December 899 removed Zwentibold’s principal support. Many Lotharingian nobles then recognized Arnulf’s young legitimate son, Louis the Child, as king. In 900 open war followed. Zwentibold was defeated and killed in battle on 13 August 900, near Susteren, by a coalition of counts that included Reginar. He was buried at Susteren Abbey.

After his death a local cult grew up around him. He came to be venerated as a saint, especially in the Meuse country, and his feast was kept on 13 August, the day of his death. The abbey of Susteren remained the centre of his memoria. While later hagiography sometimes portrayed him as a defender of the poor and of the Church, the historical record presents a Carolingian sub-king whose authority collapsed once his imperial father was gone, in a kingdom already slipping from Carolingian control.
