Biography

Stefano Bellesini was born on 25 November 1774 in Trent (Trento), then the seat of a prince-bishopric within the Holy Roman Empire. Raised in a pious household, he entered the Order of Saint Augustine as a young man and was ordained a priest. His formation took place against the backdrop of the late eighteenth-century Enlightenment and the approaching revolutionary wars that would soon disrupt religious life throughout northern Italy and the German lands.

The Napoleonic era brought the suppression of the Augustinian convents in the Trentino. Bellesini was compelled to leave the cloister and exercise his ministry among the secular clergy. He spent these years teaching young people and serving as a parish priest, earning a reputation for pastoral zeal, especially in the instruction of children and the care of the needy. Throughout this period of exile from community life he remained faithful to the spirit of his order and longed for its restoration.

After the Congress of Vienna and the return of more favorable conditions for religious orders, Bellesini resumed life as an Augustinian. He was appointed novice master and later held positions of responsibility within the Italian provinces of the order. In 1831 he received the assignment that would define the last decade of his life: parish priest and rector of the renowned shrine of Our Lady of Good Counsel at Genazzano in the Roman Campagna. There he combined the administration of a major pilgrimage church with the ordinary duties of a country pastor, becoming known for his accessibility, his long hours in the confessional, and his personal poverty.

When typhus broke out in Genazzano at the beginning of 1840, Bellesini immediately devoted himself to the victims. He went from house to house bringing the sacraments and whatever material relief he could gather, disregarding the danger to his own health. He fell ill and died on 2 February 1840 at the age of sixty-five. He was interred in the shrine he had served. Popular veneration began almost at once. After the usual canonical processes, Pope Pius X beatified him on 27 December 1904. Blessed Stefano Bellesini is remembered as a model of the priest who remains with his people in time of pestilence and as a faithful son of Saint Augustine.
