Biography
Venerable Anthony (Medvedev) was born Alexander Ivanovich Medvedev in 1792 in the village of Lipitsy, Novgorod Governorate, in the Russian Empire. Coming from a family connected to church service, he received a theological education at the Novgorod Seminary. After a period of teaching, he embraced monasticism, receiving the name Anthony upon tonsure, and was later ordained and elevated to archimandrite.
In 1831 he was appointed namestnik of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra, the preeminent monastery of the Russian Church, a post he occupied until his death forty-six years later. Throughout the nineteenth century he directed the spiritual, liturgical, and economic life of the large community, preserving the traditions established by St. Sergius of Radonezh while adapting to the needs of his time. He was known for humility, ceaseless prayer, and wise governance, earning the respect of hierarchs, monks, and pilgrims.
Anthony worked closely with Metropolitan Philaret (Drozdov) of Moscow and other leading figures of the Russian Orthodox Church. Under his care the lavra remained a vital center of pilgrimage, monastic formation, and Orthodox culture during a period of imperial reform and social change. He personally exemplified the monastic ideal through simplicity of life and dedication to the brethren.
He reposed on 12 May 1877 within the lavra and was buried there. Veneration of his memory persisted among the faithful. The Russian Orthodox Church officially glorified him as a saint in 1998 at the Jubilee Bishops’ Council. Saint Anthony of Radonezh is commemorated on 12 May and is honored as a faithful steward of one of Russia’s holiest sites.
