Biography

Short Description

Anthony the Roman (Antoniy Rimlyanin) was a twelfth-century monk who founded the Monastery of the Nativity of the Theotokos, known as the Antoniev Monastery, on the Volkhov River at Novgorod. He is venerated as a saint in the Eastern Orthodox Church. The principal source for his life is a sixteenth-century hagiographical Life that presents him as a native of Rome who remained attached to Eastern Christian practice after the schism of 1054. That text states that, after the death of his parents, he distributed his property, received the monastic tonsure, and lived as a hermit on a rock in the sea until the rock was miraculously carried across the water to the vicinity of Novgorod in the early twelfth century. Modern historians treat the Roman origin, the precise birth date given in the Life, and the floating-stone voyage as legendary; the epithet “the Roman” may reflect a later attempt to confer prestige on the house or may have another, now-lost explanation. The existence of the founder and of the monastery itself in the early 1100s is, however, not in doubt.

Novgorod chronicles and the fabric of the surviving katholikon confirm that a stone church dedicated to the Nativity of the Mother of God was begun in 1117 and completed in 1119 under Anthony’s direction. The building, with its three domes and early Novgorodian masonry, remains one of the oldest standing churches in northern Russia. Anthony served as the first abbot, gathered a community, and was buried in the church after his death on 3 August 1147. In 1597 his relics were uncovered and reported incorrupt; they became a focus of local pilgrimage. The monastery developed into a significant centre of monastic life, manuscript production, and icon painting in medieval Novgorod, though it later suffered in wars and was closed in the Soviet period before being revived in recent decades.

Anthony is commemorated on 3 August. He is depicted in icons as an elderly monk, sometimes holding a model of his church or standing upon the stone of the legend. No contemporary evidence records a wife or children, and the entire tradition presents him as a monk from youth; he held no episcopal or patriarchal office. While the miraculous elements of his Life cannot be verified historically, the architectural and chronicle record establishes him as a real monastic founder of the early twelfth century whose house played a lasting role in the religious culture of Novgorod.
