Biography

Short Description

Alexander Ivanovich Medvedev, later known in monasticism as Anthony, was born on 17 October 1792 in Lyskovo, a village in the Nizhny Novgorod Governorate of the Russian Empire. His father served as a deacon, and the family belonged to the clerical estate. Alexander studied at the Nizhny Novgorod Theological Seminary. After completing his education he taught at a local church school. Drawn to the monastic life, he became a novice in a Moscow monastery and was tonsured a monk, receiving the name Anthony.

In the 1820s he was ordained to the diaconate and priesthood as a hieromonk. His abilities in administration and his pious life led to his appointment in 1831 as the namestnik (governor) of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra, the renowned monastery founded in the fourteenth century by St. Sergius of Radonezh. He remained in this office for forty-six years. Under his care the lavra saw restorations of its ancient churches, construction of new facilities for pilgrims and monks, and a flourishing of monastic life during the nineteenth century.

Archimandrite Anthony was a contemporary and collaborator of Metropolitan Philaret (Drozdov) of Moscow, one of the most prominent hierarchs of the Russian Church. He provided spiritual direction to many visitors to the lavra and was known for personal austerity and dedication to prayer alongside heavy administrative duties. He lived through a period of significant change in the Russian Empire while maintaining the traditional Orthodox monastic ethos at the lavra.

He died on 12 May 1877 at the Trinity-Sergius Lavra and was interred on its grounds. Veneration of Archimandrite Anthony grew in the twentieth century, and he was officially glorified as a saint by the Russian Orthodox Church for local veneration toward the end of that century. His feast is observed on the anniversary of his repose. He is remembered as an example of long-term faithful monastic governance and spiritual fatherhood in the Russian Orthodox tradition of the nineteenth century.
