Biography

Short Description

Barlaam of Khutyn was a twelfth-century monastic saint of the Eastern Orthodox Church, closely associated with the medieval city of Novgorod. Born into a prosperous family in Novgorod, he chose a life of poverty and prayer after the death of his parents, distributing his wealth to the poor before entering a monastery.

Desiring a more solitary existence, he settled at Khutyn, a marshy and isolated location on the Volkhov River some distance from Novgorod. There he constructed a simple cell and later a church in honor of the Transfiguration. Monks gathered around the hermit, and the settlement developed into the Khutyn Monastery of the Transfiguration, an important spiritual center in the region.

Hagiographical sources, composed in the centuries after his death, describe Barlaam as an exemplary ascetic gifted with prophecy and the ability to work miracles. He died in 1192 and was laid to rest in the monastery he had founded. Local veneration arose quickly, and he became one of the most honored saints of Novgorod.

The Russian Orthodox Church observes his feast on 6 November. Although contemporary documentary evidence for his life is scarce and later vitae contain legendary elements, Barlaam of Khutyn stands as a representative figure of the monastic revival that took place in northern Rus' during the twelfth century. His monastery endured as a major institution until the twentieth century.

Icons of the saint typically portray him as an elderly monk in a dark habit, sometimes holding a model of his monastery or a scroll. He continues to be venerated in the Orthodox tradition, particularly in Russia, as a wonderworker and intercessor.
