Biography

Short Description

Saint Varlaam of Khutyn (also rendered Barlaam of Khutyn), known in secular life as Alexa Mikhailovich, was a monastic founder and wonderworker of the Novgorod land in the twelfth century. He was born in the city of Novgorod to a family of means; later hagiographical tradition sometimes names his parents Mikhail and Anna, though contemporary documentation of his parentage and exact birth year has not survived. After the death of his parents he distributed his inheritance to the poor of Novgorod and embraced voluntary poverty. He received the monastic tonsure and the name Varlaam, spending an initial period in established houses of the Novgorod region before withdrawing to a remote, marshy site on the right bank of the Volkhov River about ten kilometres from the city. The place was called Khutyn, a name associated with desolation, and was generally avoided.

There Varlaam built a cell and later a church dedicated to the Transfiguration of the Saviour. Disciples gathered around him, and the community became the Khutyn Monastery, of which he was the first igumen. He was remembered for severe asceticism, unceasing prayer, spiritual discernment, and miracles during his lifetime, including the gift of foresight. Traditional accounts state that he appointed a successor before his death. According to the monastic tradition and the chronology of his Life, he reposed on 6 November 1192 and was buried at the monastery he had founded.

Local veneration in Novgorod began soon after his death. His relics became a focus of reported healings and other miracles, and the monastery attracted the patronage of Novgorodian posadniks, princes, and, in later centuries, Muscovite rulers. Saint Varlaam is counted among the principal saints of pre-Mongol northern Rus’ monasticism. He is commemorated on 6 November, with an additional local observance on the first Friday of the Apostles’ Fast in some usages connected with a miracle involving the relics. Icons typically show him as an elderly monk. While later legends accumulated around his name, the historical core of his memory is that of a twelfth-century Novgorodian ascetic who turned a desolate site into a lasting centre of Orthodox monastic life.
