Biography

Short Description

Dimitry of Rostov was born Daniil Savvich Tuptalo in 1651 in the village of Makariv in the Kiev region, then within the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, to a Cossack family. His father Savva Grigorievich Tuptalo held the rank of sotnik. In the mid-seventeenth century he studied at the Kiev Mohyla Academy, receiving instruction in theology, rhetoric, and classical languages including Latin, Greek, and Polish, at a time when the academy served as a major center of Orthodox learning amid regional religious and political pressures.

He entered monastic life in 1668, taking the name Dimitry at a monastery near Kiev, and was ordained a hieromonk. Over the following decades of the late seventeenth century he served as preacher and hegumen at monasteries in Chernigov, Novgorod-Seversky, Vilnius, and other locations in Ukrainian, Belarusian, and Lithuanian lands. During this period he began compiling the Chetii-Minei, a comprehensive collection of saints' lives arranged by the liturgical calendar, drawing on Greek, Latin, and earlier Slavonic sources.

In 1701 Tsar Peter I summoned him to Moscow. Health considerations led to his appointment in 1702 as Metropolitan of Rostov rather than to Siberia. In Rostov in the early eighteenth century he founded a school for clergy that taught Slavonic, Greek, and Latin, continued and completed his menologion around 1705, and wrote polemical works against the Old Believers. He also produced sermons, a chronicle, and school dramas on religious themes while maintaining an ascetic personal discipline and engaging in charity.

Dimitry died in Rostov on 28 October 1709. His relics were found incorrupt in 1752, after which the Russian Orthodox Church glorified him as a saint in 1757. His Chetii-Minei became a standard hagiographical and devotional resource in the Russian Church, shaping Orthodox piety and liturgical reading for subsequent generations.
