Biography

Short Description

Valentin Felixovich Voyno-Yasenetsky was born on 27 April 1877 in Kerch, Taurida Governorate, Russian Empire, to a family of modest means with Polish ancestry. His father worked as a pharmacist. Although gifted in drawing, he chose to study medicine at Saint Vladimir University in Kiev, from which he graduated in 1903, motivated by a desire to help the suffering. He began his career as a surgeon during the Russo-Japanese War, serving in field hospitals in the Far East. Subsequently he worked as a zemstvo physician in several provinces, becoming renowned for his skill in abdominal and purulent surgery and for pioneering methods of local anesthesia. In 1904 he married nurse Anna Vasilyevna Lanskaya; the marriage produced four children before Anna succumbed to tuberculosis in 1919.

The death of his wife marked a turning point. While serving as chief surgeon in Tashkent, Voyno-Yasenetsky was ordained to the priesthood in 1921 and, in 1923, received monastic tonsure with the name Luke. That same year he was consecrated bishop. His episcopal ministry coincided with the height of Soviet anti-religious campaigns. Arrested in 1923, he spent the next two decades in repeated imprisonment and exile in Siberia, the Turukhansk region, and the Arctic. Throughout these ordeals he never ceased practicing medicine, operating on fellow prisoners and local inhabitants under primitive conditions, and he completed the manuscript of his classic textbook on purulent surgery.

During the Great Patriotic War the Soviet authorities, needing his surgical expertise, released him and appointed him Archbishop of Krasnoyarsk. He organized military hospitals and performed thousands of operations on wounded soldiers. In 1944 he was transferred to Tambov and in 1946 to the Diocese of Simferopol and Crimea, which he governed until his death. Even after he became nearly blind he continued to preach, to write, and to consult on medical cases. In 1946 he was awarded the Stalin Prize for his scientific contributions, an unusual honor for a bishop of the persecuted Church.

Archbishop Luke reposed on 11 June 1961 in Simferopol. He was first buried in the city cemetery. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, veneration of the confessor-bishop spread rapidly. The Ukrainian Orthodox Church glorified him as a locally venerated saint in 1995; the entire Russian Orthodox Church followed in August 2000. His relics, found incorrupt, were translated to the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in Simferopol, where they remain a focus of pilgrimage. Saint Luke is commemorated on 11 June and is invoked as a heavenly patron by physicians, surgeons, and all who practice the art of healing.
