Biography

Short Description

Nikolai Alekseyevich Guryanov was born on 24 May 1909 in the village of Chudskiye Zakhody in the Gdov district of the Saint Petersburg Governorate, then part of the Russian Empire, into a devout peasant family. His father Aleksey worked as a miller and psalm-reader and his mother Ekaterina raised the children in the practices of the Russian Orthodox Church. From childhood he served in the altar and sang in the choir. After studies at the Gdov theological school and a pedagogical college in Gatchina he worked through the 1930s as a teacher of mathematics and physics in rural schools, a period of severe anti-religious pressure under Soviet rule.

When the Pskov region fell under German occupation during the Second World War, Guryanov was ordained deacon and then priest in 1942 within the Pskov Orthodox Mission that sought to restore parish life. He served several local churches. After the war he continued as a priest of the Moscow Patriarchate. In 1958 he was appointed rector of the neglected Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker on the remote island of Talabsk (later called Zalit) in Lake Pskov, a post he held for the remaining forty-four years of his life.

Although belonging to the secular (white) clergy, Guryanov never married and lived in strict celibacy, assisted in later decades by a sister. He followed an austere rule of little food and sleep and long hours of prayer. Isolated by the island’s location, he gradually became known as a starets. Pilgrims attributed to him gifts of spiritual discernment, healing and counsel; by the 1990s thousands travelled to the island for confession and blessing. He restored the church fabric and remained accessible even after he grew blind and frail.

Guryanov died on 24 August 2002 on Zalit Island at the age of ninety-three and was buried beside the church he had served. The Russian Orthodox Church has not formally canonized him, yet popular veneration is widespread: icons circulate, miracle accounts are collected, and his grave continues to draw pilgrims. His life is remembered as that of a parish priest who combined ordinary liturgical duty with the hidden asceticism of an elder in the late Soviet and post-Soviet eras.
