Biography

Short Description

Innocent of Irkutsk, known in secular life as Ioann Kulchitsky, was born circa 1680 in the Chernigov region of Left-Bank Ukraine, then within the Tsardom of Russia. Surviving accounts describe his family as belonging to the lesser nobility or the clergy. He received his formation at the Kiev Mohyla Academy, the foremost Orthodox school of higher learning in the East Slavic lands, whose curriculum combined patristic theology with elements of Latin scholasticism. After completing his studies he was tonsured a monk with the name Innocent and ordained to the priesthood. His learning led to teaching posts at the Moscow Slavic-Greek-Latin Academy and later at ecclesiastical institutions in St. Petersburg associated with the Alexander Nevsky Monastery.

In 1721 Innocent was consecrated a bishop and appointed to lead the Russian Orthodox spiritual mission in Beijing, intended to serve the Albazinian community settled in China and to represent Orthodoxy at the Qing court. The death of the Kangxi Emperor and subsequent diplomatic and bureaucratic delays prevented him from ever entering China. He remained for years in Siberia, residing at Selenginsk and other points, where he continued pastoral work while awaiting permission that never came. In 1727 the Holy Synod erected the new Diocese of Irkutsk and Nerchinsk to provide hierarchical oversight for the vast territories of eastern Siberia; Innocent was named its first bishop.

As bishop he organized church life across an enormous and sparsely populated see. He oversaw the building of churches, founded a monastery, and established a Slavic-Latin school to train clergy and educate local youth. He undertook missionary journeys among Buryats, Evenks and other indigenous peoples as well as among Russian settlers, merchants and garrison troops, and he encouraged the translation of liturgical and instructional texts. Contemporary notices emphasize his personal austerity, fasting and simplicity of life amid the harsh Siberian climate and the material poverty of the frontier diocese. His episcopate lasted only four years.

Innocent died in Irkutsk on 27 November 1731 and was buried locally. Veneration arose soon afterward; reports of miracles and the discovery that his relics remained incorrupt prompted official inquiry. In 1804 the Russian Orthodox Church glorified him as a saint. He is commemorated principally on 26 November, with additional observances connected to the uncovering and translation of his relics. He is honored as the first hierarch and enlightener of Siberia and as heavenly patron of the Irkutsk land.
