Biography

Short Description

Kliment Smolyatich, known in English as Clement of Smolensk, was a leading ecclesiastical writer and hierarch of twelfth-century Kievan Rus'. The exact year of his birth remains unknown, as do many details of his family background and early education. His byname Smolyatich indicates an origin in or connection to the city and principality of Smolensk. By the 1140s he had become a monk of notable erudition. The Kievan Chronicle describes him as a great philosopher, a man of such learning as had not previously been seen in the Rus' land, suggesting he possessed knowledge of Greek and was steeped in patristic literature and possibly classical philosophy.

In 1147, following the death of Metropolitan Michael, Grand Prince Izyaslav Mstislavich of Kiev assembled a synod of bishops with the intention of filling the vacant metropolitan see without reference to the Patriarch of Constantinople. The bishops elected Kliment, then a simple monk, possibly from the Zarub Monastery located on the Dnieper River south of Kiev. This act of local election and consecration was a bold assertion of the rights of the Rus' church and the Kievan prince. It provoked immediate opposition from several hierarchs, most prominently Bishop Nifont of Novgorod, who remained loyal to the traditional dependence on Constantinople. The resulting controversy divided the episcopate and reflected broader political struggles among the Rurikid princes.

Kliment occupied the metropolitan throne from 1147 until 1155. During these years he aligned himself with Izyaslav Mstislavich. He is the author of a theological epistle written to a certain Presbyter Thomas, which survives as an important monument of original Kievan literature. In the letter Kliment justifies the allegorical interpretation of Holy Scripture, drawing on examples from the books of Genesis, Kings, and the Prophets, and displaying familiarity with the exegetical methods of the Byzantine tradition. The work reveals a mind trained in sophisticated theology rather than mere monastic piety.

The fortunes of Kliment changed abruptly in 1155. After Izyaslav's death, Yuri Dolgorukiy of Suzdal seized Kiev and installed a new metropolitan, Constantine, who had been duly consecrated in Constantinople. Kliment was compelled to leave office. He spent his remaining years in retirement, most likely in a monastic setting. Traditional chronology places his death in the year 1164, although the precise location of his passing and his burial place are not recorded in extant chronicles.

Kliment Smolyatich was never formally glorified as a saint by the Orthodox Church and possesses neither an assigned feast day nor a developed hagiographical cult. Nevertheless, he stands as a significant figure in the ecclesiastical and intellectual history of Kievan Rus'. His brief metropolitanate represents an early, if unsuccessful, experiment in autocephaly, while his writings testify to the high level of theological culture that existed among the native clergy of the twelfth century. Historians continue to study him as an example of the tensions between local princely power, the episcopal college, and the ecumenical patriarchate in the pre-Mongol period.
