Biography

Short Description

Saint Moninne (also called Moninna, Darerca, Blinne, or Mo Ninne) was an early Irish abbess and one of the principal female saints of Ulster, commemorated as the founder of the monastery of Killeavy (Cill Shléibhe) at the foot of Slieve Gullion in present-day County Armagh. She belongs to the generation of Irish monastic founders of the fifth and early sixth centuries. Her cult is securely attested in the early Irish martyrologies, which keep her feast on 6 July and associate her with the mountain of Cuilenn. A notice in the Annals of Ulster records the repose in 517 of Darerca who is called Moninne. Beyond that annalistic date and the place of her cult, almost all narrative detail derives from later hagiography, especially an eleventh-century Latin Life associated with Conchubranus, and must be treated as tradition rather than verified biography. Later English writing further complicated the dossier by identifying or blending her with Saint Modwenna of Burton-upon-Trent.

Traditional accounts place her birth in the territory of the Conaille Muirtheimne, a people of what is now County Louth and southern County Down, and often name Donaghmore in County Down as her birthplace. She is described as the daughter of a local ruler named Mochta (or Machta) and as a consecrated virgin from youth. Lives connect her in various, not always consistent, ways with Saint Patrick, with Saint Ibar, and with Saint Brigid of Kildare; she is said to have received the veil in the orbit of the Patrician mission and to have spent time in other women’s communities before establishing her own. None of these personal links can be confirmed independently. What the tradition consistently maintains is that she gathered a community of virgins and settled them at Killeavy, where she ruled as abbess. Later writers claimed the community numbered as many as one hundred and fifty nuns.

The same Lives portray Moninne as an austere ascetic, given to fasting, vigils, and extreme simplicity, including the motif of a stone used as a pillow. They also attribute to her pilgrimages to Rome and to Britain and a series of healing and provision miracles. Journeys abroad are a stock theme in Irish saints’ Lives and may reflect later efforts to tie her cult to churches in Britain, especially once Burton Abbey had an interest in an Irish foundress. Whether she travelled at all remains unknown. At Killeavy she is presented as the teacher of other holy women and as the head of a lasting monastic household. Her successor in the abbacy is named in some texts, but the early succession cannot be reconstructed with confidence.

She is held to have died at her own monastery and to have been buried there. The site remained a focus of local devotion: a holy well dedicated to her, early ecclesiastical remains, and a grave traditionally identified as hers survive at the Killeavy Old Churches. Because so much of the written legend is late, and because Conchubranus and subsequent English hagiographers folded Irish Moninne into the legend of Modwenna in order to serve the claims of Burton, modern historians regard the colourful narrative episodes as largely unrecoverable. What can be said with reasonable caution is that an early female monastic founder known as Moninne or Darerca was commemorated at Killeavy, that her feast on 6 July is well established in the Irish calendrical tradition, and that her cult endured in the Slieve Gullion district through the Middle Ages.
