Biography

Short Description

Saint Nicholas of Japan, known in the world as Ivan Dmitrievich Kasatkin, was born on 13 August 1836 in the village of Berezovsky Pogost in Belsky Uyezd, Smolensk Governorate, in the Russian Empire. The son of a deacon, he was educated at church schools in Belsk and at the Smolensk Theological Seminary before entering the Saint Petersburg Theological Academy in 1857. While a student he volunteered to serve as a missionary priest attached to the Russian consulate in Hakodate, Japan, a country that had only recently ended more than two centuries of isolation. Tonsured a monk with the name Nicholas in 1860 and ordained to the priesthood, he arrived in Hakodate in 1861.

The early years of his mission were marked by isolation, language barriers, and official hostility toward Christianity, which remained legally prohibited until the 1870s. Nicholas immersed himself in the Japanese language, classical literature, history, and the religions of Shinto and Buddhism in order to communicate the Orthodox faith without unnecessary cultural offense. He produced translations of the Gospels, the Acts of the Apostles, and liturgical texts. The first baptisms of Japanese converts took place in 1868; among them was Takuma Sawabe, a former samurai and Shinto priest who received the name Paul and later became one of the first Japanese Orthodox priests. Despite periods of persecution and the burning of mission property, a small community took root.

In 1872 Nicholas transferred the center of the mission to Tokyo, where he founded a seminary, catechetical schools, and a publishing house. He was consecrated bishop in 1880 and subsequently raised to the rank of archbishop of Tokyo and All Japan. Under his leadership the Holy Resurrection Cathedral, popularly called Nikolai-do, was built and consecrated in 1891, becoming the architectural and spiritual heart of Japanese Orthodoxy. Nicholas ordained a native Japanese clergy, established parishes across the islands, and completed translations of the New Testament and a large portion of the liturgical corpus into Japanese. By the early twentieth century the Orthodox Church in Japan numbered tens of thousands of faithful.

During the Russo-Japanese War of 1904–1905 Archbishop Nicholas remained in Tokyo with his Japanese flock. He directed Japanese Orthodox Christians to pray for the victory of their own country while he privately prayed for Russia, and he omitted the usual commemoration of the Russian emperor in public services so as not to place his people in a position of conflicted loyalty. This pastoral decision, together with his decades of identification with Japanese life, earned him lasting respect. Weakened by illness in his later years, he died in Tokyo on 16 February 1912 and was buried at Yanaka Cemetery. In 1970 the Russian Orthodox Church glorified him as a saint with the title Equal-to-the-Apostles. He is commemorated on 16 February and is venerated as the founder and heavenly patron of the Orthodox Church in Japan.
