Biography

Short Description

Pyotr Fyodorovich Polyansky was born in 1862 in the village of Storozhevoe in the Voronezh Governorate of the Russian Empire, into the family of a rural priest. He received his initial theological training at the Voronezh Theological Seminary and later graduated from the Moscow Theological Academy. For more than two decades he worked in the system of Orthodox theological education, serving as a teacher and inspector at seminaries and eventually taking a responsible post in the Educational Committee of the Holy Synod. He remained a layman throughout this period, known for his administrative abilities and traditional church views.

The upheavals of 1917 and the following years brought him into closer collaboration with the newly restored Patriarchate. In 1920 Patriarch Tikhon tonsured him as a monk with the name Peter, ordained him to the holy orders, and consecrated him Bishop of Podolsk, a vicar bishop of Moscow. Within a few years he was elevated to the rank of metropolitan and appointed to the historic see of Krutitsy, becoming one of the principal assistants to the patriarch in governing the vast Moscow diocese and representing the Church in dealings with the Soviet authorities.

After Patriarch Tikhon's death in 1925, Metropolitan Peter assumed the office of Patriarchal Locum Tenens as designated in the patriarch's testament. He immediately faced intense pressure from the GPU to issue declarations of loyalty that would have implied acceptance of the regime's control over church life and to recognize the schismatic Living Church. He refused these demands. In December 1925 he was arrested and thereafter never regained his freedom. For twelve years he was moved between prisons, isolators in Suzdal and Yaroslavl, and places of exile in the Urals and Kazakhstan, yet a substantial portion of the Russian episcopate and laity continued to regard him as the legitimate first hierarch.

During the mass repressions of 1937 Metropolitan Peter was sentenced to death by an extrajudicial NKVD troika and was shot on 10 October 1937. The precise circumstances of his burial remain unknown. He was glorified as a hieromartyr by the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia in 1981 and by the Moscow Patriarchate in 2000 among the Synaxis of the New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia. His memory is kept on 10 October and with the other new martyrs. Historians of the twentieth-century Russian Church regard him as a key figure whose uncompromising stand defined one of the principal responses of Orthodoxy to Soviet persecution.
