Biography

Short Description

Pyotr Fyodorovich Polyansky was born in 1862 in the village of Storozhevoye in the Voronezh Governorate of the Russian Empire, the son of a parish priest. After completing the Voronezh Theological Seminary he studied at the Moscow Theological Academy, graduating in 1892. For nearly three decades thereafter he served the Russian Orthodox Church as a layman, working as a teacher, school inspector, and administrator, and later in the Educational Committee of the Holy Synod. He acquired a reputation as a capable and conscientious church educator and administrator and became a trusted collaborator of Archbishop, later Patriarch, Tikhon.

The Bolshevik Revolution and the persecution of the Church that followed transformed the course of his life. In 1920, at the age of fifty-eight, he was tonsured a monk with the name Peter, ordained to the priesthood, and shortly afterward consecrated Bishop of Podolsk, a vicar of the Moscow diocese, by Patriarch Tikhon. He was rapidly advanced, becoming an archbishop and then, in 1924, Metropolitan of Krutitsy, an ancient title that placed him among the senior hierarchs resident in Moscow and made him one of the Patriarch’s closest assistants. When Patriarch Tikhon died in April 1925, a secret testament named Metropolitan Peter as patriarchal locum tenens. Peter accepted the office and for some eight months attempted to govern the Church under intense pressure from the Soviet authorities, who sought a compliant leadership.

Refusing to make the political concessions demanded by the regime, Metropolitan Peter was arrested in December 1925. He spent the remaining twelve years of his life in prisons, isolators, and remote exile, including a period beyond the Arctic Circle at the settlement of Khe and later confinement at Verkhneuralsk. From captivity he continued to be regarded by a substantial part of the episcopate and faithful as the legitimate head of the Russian Church. He did not endorse the 1927 declaration of Metropolitan Sergius (Stragorodsky), who had assumed the duties of deputy locum tenens and pledged loyalty to the Soviet state; Peter’s continued existence as locum tenens therefore remained a canonical point of reference for those who rejected that policy.

During the Great Purge of 1937 he was transferred to Magnitogorsk, condemned by an NKVD troika, and shot on 10 October 1937. His grave has never been identified. He was glorified as a hieromartyr by the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia in 1981 and by the Moscow Patriarchate at the Jubilee Bishops’ Council of 1997. The Russian Orthodox Church commemorates him on 10 October, the date of his martyrdom, and among the Synaxis of the New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia.
