Biography

Short Description

Saint Procopius of Ustyug (Prokopiy Ustyuzhsky) was a holy fool-for-Christ of the Russian North whose life belongs to the late thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries. Traditional accounts identify him as a native of the Western, Latin Christian world, a prosperous merchant from the Hanseatic city of Lübeck. Upon arriving in Novgorod the Great he was converted to Orthodoxy by the beauty of its liturgy and the example of its saints. He immediately distributed his wealth among the poor and the churches and adopted the difficult podvig of foolishness for Christ’s sake, concealing spiritual gifts beneath an appearance of madness and extreme poverty.

Leaving Novgorod, Procopius settled in the remote town of Veliky Ustyug. There he lived as a wanderer, going barefoot in all seasons, clothed in rags, and spending nights on the porches of churches or in the open air. He was frequently seen in prayer upon a large boulder beside the Sukhona River, holding a staff surmounted by crosses. The townspeople at first treated him with ridicule or suspicion, a reaction common to the lives of yurodivye.

The central miracle of his vita occurred in 1290. Foreseeing a catastrophic storm that threatened to destroy Ustyug with fire and a rain of stones, Procopius ran through the streets calling the people to repentance. They ignored him until a fearsome black cloud appeared. Then the inhabitants crowded into the cathedral, where Procopius prayed before the icon of the Annunciation. The deadly hail of stones fell in the surrounding fields rather than on the town, an event sometimes linked by later writers to a meteorite fall. From that time his reputation as a wonder-worker was established.

Procopius died on 8 July 1303 and was buried near the Dormition Cathedral of Veliky Ustyug. Miracles at his tomb led to local veneration; a church dedicated to him was later built on the site. His written life dates from the sixteenth century, and he was numbered among the saints of the Russian Church. He is honored as the heavenly patron of Veliky Ustyug, and his memory is kept on 8 July. Icons show him as an aged ascetic in tattered garments, often with his distinctive staff and the stone on which he prayed.
