Biography

Short Description

Saint Nicholas of Japan, born Ivan Dmitrievich Kasatkin, entered the world on 13 August 1836 in the village of Berezovsky Pogost in the Smolensk Governorate of the Russian Empire. The son of a deacon, he received a traditional ecclesiastical education, studying at the Smolensk Theological Seminary before entering the Saint Petersburg Theological Academy. In 1860 he was tonsured a monk, given the name Nicholas, ordained hieromonk, and dispatched as a missionary priest to serve the Russian consulate in Hakodate, Japan. He arrived the following year in a land where Christianity remained legally prohibited and culturally alien.

In Hakodate, Nicholas immersed himself in the Japanese language and classical literature, eventually achieving a level of fluency and scholarly competence that few foreigners of his time matched. He commenced the laborious work of translating the Orthodox liturgy, catechism, and Scriptures into Japanese. The baptism of the first Japanese Orthodox Christian, Pavel Sawabe, a former samurai, occurred in 1868. As Japan opened during the Meiji period, Nicholas relocated the mission to Tokyo, was raised to archimandrite in 1870, and in 1880 was consecrated a bishop. He established a seminary to train native clergy, founded educational institutions, and directed the building of churches across the Japanese islands, culminating in the Holy Resurrection Cathedral in Tokyo.

Throughout his half-century of service, Nicholas insisted that the Orthodox Church in Japan must become a genuinely Japanese church rather than a Russian colony. He ordained Japanese priests and deacons, published extensively in Japanese, and navigated the delicate political situation during the Russo-Japanese War by remaining with his flock in Tokyo and encouraging them to fulfill their duties as Japanese subjects. By the time of his death the Japanese Orthodox community comprised more than thirty thousand believers served by dozens of native clergy.

Nicholas died in Tokyo on 16 February 1912 and was interred in Yanaka Cemetery. The Russian Orthodox Church glorified him as a saint in 1970, bestowing the title Equal-to-the-Apostles, Archbishop of Japan. He is commemorated on 16 February and is honored as the founder and heavenly patron of the Orthodox Church in Japan.
