Biography

Short Description

Saint Savva of Storozhi, also called Savva Storozhevsky or Saint Sabbas of Zvenigorod, was a Russian Orthodox monastic saint of the late fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries. Surviving historical sources do not record the year or place of his birth. He became a monk at the Trinity Monastery of Saint Sergius of Radonezh, among the most important monastic centres of medieval Russia, and was numbered among the disciples of Saint Sergius himself. At Trinity he served as ecclesiarch, the monk responsible for the orderly celebration of the divine services, and was noted for humility, obedience, and a strict ascetic life.

In the closing years of the fourteenth century, traditionally placed around 1398, Prince Yuri Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod, a son of Grand Prince Dmitry Donskoy, asked Savva to leave the Trinity Monastery and found a new house in the Zvenigorod principality. Savva chose an elevated, wooded site known as Storozhi, meaning the watch-place, above the Moscow River near the town of Zvenigorod. There he established a monastery dedicated to the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos and became its first hegumen. The community followed the cenobitic traditions inherited from Saint Sergius. During his abbacy a stone cathedral of the Nativity was built, around 1405, an early example of Muscovite white-stone church architecture.

Savva spent his remaining years at the monastery, combining the duties of abbot with personal prayer and the spiritual direction of monks and lay visitors, including the ruling prince. He died on 3 December 1406 and was buried in the monastery church. Local veneration developed after his death. In 1652, in the reign of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich, the relics of Saint Savva were uncovered and reported incorrupt; that event is commemorated on 23 August. The same tsar attributed a deliverance from danger during a hunt near the monastery to the saint’s intercession and thereafter showed particular devotion to Savva, granting the house imperial patronage. Members of the Romanov dynasty continued to honour him.

Saint Savva is commemorated in the Orthodox liturgical calendar on 3 December, the day of his repose, and 23 August, the uncovering of his relics. He is regarded as a wonderworker and as a heavenly patron of Zvenigorod. The Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery he founded remained a significant spiritual, architectural, and cultural landmark of the Moscow region in later centuries and a place of pilgrimage to his relics.
