Biography

Short Description

Saint Sophronius of Irkutsk (in the world Stefan Kristalevsky) was born on 25 December 1703 in Berezan, a settlement of the Pereyaslav Regiment in the Cossack Hetmanate, in what is now Ukraine. His father, Nazary, belonged to the clerical estate. In the first half of the eighteenth century the Kiev Mohyla Academy was the principal center of Orthodox higher learning in the East Slavic lands, and it was there that the future bishop received his education in theology, languages, and the humanities. After completing the course he entered the Kiev Brotherhood Monastery of the Theophany. There he was tonsured a monk and given the name Sophronius, beginning a life of monastic discipline that would shape his later pastoral work.

From Kiev he was transferred to the Alexander Nevsky Monastery in Saint Petersburg, then the newly prominent capital of the Russian Empire, where he held administrative responsibilities. He was later appointed archimandrite of the Saviour-St. James (Spaso-Yakovlevsky) Monastery in Rostov, an ancient and respected house in northern Russia. These successive posts placed him among the educated monastic elite of the Russian Church. In 1753 he was consecrated to the episcopate and named Bishop of Irkutsk and Nerchinsk. The Irkutsk diocese, created earlier in the eighteenth century, covered an enormous territory of eastern Siberia, including regions inhabited by Buryats, Evenks, Yakuts, and other peoples, as well as Russian settlers, Cossacks, and exiles.

Sophronius arrived in Irkutsk in 1754 and remained at the head of the diocese until his death. His episcopate was devoted to the practical organization of church life on the frontier: the training and discipline of clergy, the founding and support of schools, the construction and repair of churches, and missionary outreach. He sought to raise the moral standard of the priesthood, opposing drunkenness and neglect of duty, and to plant Orthodox Christianity more firmly among indigenous communities while also attending to the spiritual needs of the Russian population scattered across Siberia. Contemporary and later accounts describe him as an ascetic bishop who combined administrative energy with personal austerity.

He died in Irkutsk on 30 March 1771 and was buried at the city's Ascension Monastery. In 1909 his relics were uncovered and found incorrupt, an event that strengthened local veneration. The Russian Orthodox Church glorified him as a saint in the early twentieth century. His principal feast days are 30 March, the anniversary of his repose, and 30 June, commemorating the uncovering of his relics. He is honored especially in Siberia and as a patron of Irkutsk.
