Biography

Short Description

Kamen Vitchev, born Petar Vitchev, entered the world on 23 May 1893 in the village of Srem in what is today southeastern Bulgaria. At the time of his birth the region belonged to the Ottoman Empire, and his family belonged to the small community of Bulgarian Catholics of the Byzantine rite. From an early age he was educated by the Assumptionist missionaries who had been working in Thrace and Bulgaria since the late nineteenth century. In 1910 he traveled to Luxembourg to begin his novitiate with the Augustinians of the Assumption, receiving the religious name Kamen. After profession he continued his studies in various European houses of the congregation, including time in Belgium and France, and was ordained a priest of the Eastern rite in 1921.

Returning to Bulgaria, Father Kamen devoted himself to the educational apostolate that was central to the Assumptionist charism. He taught philosophy, literature and theology at the congregation's colleges, notably in Plovdiv, and served as a formator of young religious. He was regarded as a man of learning and of deep interior life, contributing occasionally to Catholic journals. Throughout the interwar years and the Second World War he remained in Bulgaria, ministering to the Byzantine-rite faithful and maintaining the Catholic schools despite growing political tensions.

The communist seizure of power in 1944 brought systematic persecution of the Catholic Church. Religious houses were closed, foreign missionaries expelled, and native clergy placed under constant surveillance. In the summer of 1952 Father Vitchev was arrested together with two fellow Assumptionists, Pavel Djidjov and Josaphat Chichkov. They were charged with espionage and conspiracy against the state in a show trial held in Sofia in the autumn of that year. Although the accusations were fabricated, the priests refused to recant their faith or to implicate others. Subjected to interrogation and physical ill-treatment, Kamen Vitchev died in the Central Prison of Sofia on 11 November 1952.

Recognizing that he had been killed in odium fidei, the Catholic Church beatified him on 26 May 2002. Pope John Paul II presided at the ceremony in Plovdiv, raising to the honors of the altar the three Assumptionist martyrs of Bulgaria. Their witness is commemorated especially by the Byzantine Catholic community in Bulgaria and by the worldwide Assumptionist family. Father Kamen Vitchev stands as an example of intellectual dedication, priestly fidelity and martyrdom under twentieth-century totalitarianism.
