Biography

Short Description

Quadratus (also rendered Codratus) was an early Christian apologist of the second century, later remembered as bishop of Athens and, in Eastern tradition, as one of the Seventy Apostles. The earliest and most important witness is Eusebius of Caesarea, who in the fourth book of his Church History records that Quadratus presented a written apology for the Christian religion to the Emperor Hadrian. Eusebius states that copies of the work were still extant in his own day and quotes a single fragment: Quadratus argued that the works of the Saviour were genuine because those who had been healed or raised from the dead were not only seen at the time of the miracles but remained alive long afterward, some even into Quadratus’s own generation. That fragment is all that survives of the apology. The address to Hadrian is commonly associated with the emperor’s stay in Athens around 124–125, though Eusebius himself does not specify the exact occasion.

Jerome, in On Illustrious Men, identifies this Quadratus as a disciple of the apostles and as bishop of Athens, successor to Publius, who had been martyred. Eusebius also preserves a letter of Dionysius of Corinth which reports that after Publius’s martyrdom the Athenians appointed Quadratus bishop and that through him the church of Athens was gathered together again following persecution. Ancient Christian writers generally treated the apologist and the Athenian bishop as the same person; modern historians note that the identification, while traditional, is not demonstrated beyond doubt by the earliest texts. Precise years of birth and death are not recorded. He belongs to the generation that could still appeal to living memory of those who had seen Jesus or the apostles, and he was active in the Hadrianic period. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him at Athens on 26 May as a disciple of the apostles who collected the churches scattered by persecution and who died a martyr.

Later hagiographical tradition, especially in the Eastern churches, enlarges the picture. Quadratus is said to have preached in Athens and also in Magnesia and other parts of Asia Minor, converting many from paganism. Some Orthodox synaxaria describe a martyrdom by stoning, imprisonment, and death by starvation; certain accounts add that relics were later taken to Rome. The Eastern Orthodox Church commemorates the Apostle Quadratus of the Seventy on 21 September (and among the Seventy on 4 January). These narrative expansions are of later date and cannot be verified from second-century sources. Whether he was married or had children is unknown; nothing in the early witnesses addresses his household.

Quadratus is counted among the earliest Christian apologists, roughly contemporary with Aristides of Athens. His lost defense before Hadrian is evidence that Christians were already offering a reasoned, public account of their faith to the imperial court in the first half of the second century. As a reported bishop of Athens he stands in the post-apostolic succession of that see. Because so little of his writing survives and because later legend has been attached to his name, a careful account rests primarily on Eusebius and Jerome and treats later martyrdom stories and identifications with the Seventy as tradition rather than as independently verified fact. He was not Bishop of Rome, nor did he hold a patriarchal or catholicos see.
