Biography

Short Description

Quiriacus of Ostia, whose name also appears in Latin and later sources as Cyriacus, was bishop of the ancient Roman port city of Ostia in the third century. Almost nothing can be established about his origins, family, education, or the length of his episcopate. No contemporary letters, inscriptions, or administrative records naming him have survived. Ostia, at the mouth of the Tiber, was Rome’s principal harbour and already possessed a Christian community by this period, so the existence of a bishop there is historically plausible even though the man himself remains obscure.

Tradition preserved in the Roman Martyrology and earlier martyrological lists states that Quiriacus was put to death for the Christian faith together with Maximus, a priest, Archelaus, a deacon, and unnamed companions. Their martyrdom is associated with the reign of the emperor Alexander Severus (222–235). Although that emperor is often described as relatively moderate toward Christians, executions of clergy still occurred. The year of death is conventionally given as 235, at the close of Alexander’s reign; the date is an inference from the imperial chronology rather than an eyewitness report. No authentic early passio describing the circumstances of the trial or execution is extant, and later legendary elaborations must be treated with caution.

Quiriacus of Ostia is distinct from other saints of the same or similar name, notably the Roman deacon Cyriacus martyred under Diocletian (one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers) and the legendary Judas Cyriacus linked to the finding of the True Cross. His cult appears to have been essentially local to the Ostia–Rome area in late antiquity. He held neither the see of Rome nor any patriarchal throne, and he belonged to no religious order, monastic institutions of the later type not yet existing. Whether he had been married, as some third-century clergy still were, is unrecorded.

The feast of Quiriacus and his companions is kept on 23 August. Beyond the fact of his episcopal office and his death as a martyr at Ostia, the historical record is silent. No reliable information survives concerning his burial place, possible family, or any specific patronages. His place in the martyrology reflects the ancient Church’s recognition of those who died for the faith, a veneration that long predates the formal papal processes of beatification and canonization developed in the Middle Ages.
