Biography

Short Description

Quodvultdeus, whose name in Latin means 'what God wills,' was a fifth-century bishop of Carthage and one of the last prominent Latin Church Fathers of Roman North Africa. No ancient author records the year or the place of his birth, and nothing certain is known of his parents, education, or early career. He is first clearly attested as a deacon of the church of Carthage while Augustine of Hippo was still alive. In the late 420s Quodvultdeus wrote to Augustine asking him to compose a short catalogue of heresies that could be used to instruct the clergy and people of Carthage. Augustine complied with the treatise De haeresibus, which he dedicated to the deacon. The request and the dedication show that Quodvultdeus already occupied a position of trust in the African church and that he shared Augustine's concern to define Nicene belief against a wide range of opponents.

He became bishop of Carthage after Capreolus, probably in the later 430s, and thus inherited the primacy of the Catholic episcopate in Latin Africa at the moment of its greatest political danger. In October 439 the Vandal king Genseric seized Carthage. Genseric was an Arian Christian and treated the Nicene clergy as a hostile establishment. According to the tradition preserved by later African writers and by the Roman Martyrology, the king had Quodvultdeus and a large company of priests and deacons placed on ships that were barely seaworthy and driven out to sea. The exiles survived the crossing and landed in Campania, at Naples. The forced migration formed part of a wider displacement of African Catholics into Italy and the central Mediterranean, and it made Quodvultdeus the most senior African bishop in exile.

Settled at Naples, he continued to preach and to write. A group of Latin sermons is transmitted under his name or has been restored to him by modern editors. They include three sermons on the baptismal creed (De symbolo), preaching against Jews, pagans, and Arians, and homilies tied to the rites of Christian initiation and to the liturgical calendar, among them works known as De accedentibus ad gratiam, De tempore barbarico, De ultima quarta feria, De cataclysmo, and De cantico novo. The sermons combine typological reading of the Old Testament with a sharp polemic against Arian Christology and with laments for the sufferings of the African church under Vandal rule. Scholars have also attributed to him the treatise De promissionibus et praedictionibus Dei, an extensive discussion of biblical promise and fulfillment, although that ascription is not universally accepted. Even where authorship is debated, the texts associated with Quodvultdeus remain among the principal surviving witnesses to Carthaginian preaching in the mid-fifth century.

Quodvultdeus died in Naples in the middle of the fifth century. The exact year is not recorded in a contemporary chronicle and is only given approximately in later tradition, commonly as about 450. He was buried in the Catacombs of San Gennaro, the great cemetery of the Neapolitan church; a mosaic portrait of a bishop in those catacombs has long been identified as his. Local veneration of him as a holy confessor grew among the African community in Campania and was in time received into the wider Roman calendar. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on 26 October, recalling that he was put aboard rotting ships with his clergy by the Arian king Genseric, reached Naples, and died there in exile. His lasting importance is as a disciple of Augustine, as the last Catholic bishop of Carthage before Vandal rule was fully established, and as a preacher whose sermons carried the theology of Latin Africa into southern Italy.
