Biography

Short Description

Rabanus Maurus, also known as Hrabanus or Rhabanus Maurus Magnentius, was a leading Carolingian theologian, teacher, and writer, often styled Praeceptor Germaniae, meaning the teacher of Germany. He was born at Mainz in the Frankish Rhineland around the year 780, into a family of sufficient standing that he could be offered as a child oblate to the great Benedictine abbey of Fulda. There he received his early formation and, still a young man, was sent to Tours to study under Alcuin of York, the foremost scholar of Charlemagne's court school. Alcuin is said to have given him the byname Maurus, after Saint Maurus, the favourite disciple of Saint Benedict. Returning to Fulda, Rabanus was ordained deacon in 801 and priest in 814, and he soon became the abbey's master of the school, attracting students from across the Frankish world.

Under his direction the school of Fulda became one of the principal centres of learning in the Carolingian Empire. Rabanus compiled and composed an extensive body of work that included grammatical and pedagogical treatises, most notably De institutione clericorum, an encyclopaedic compilation De rerum naturis (also called De universo), a remarkable figured poem in praise of the Holy Cross titled De laudibus sanctae crucis, numerous biblical commentaries, and a body of verse and hymns. In 822 he was elected abbot of Fulda. His abbacy was marked both by building activity and by involvement in the political and ecclesiastical controversies of the reigns of Louis the Pious and his sons. After two decades he resigned the abbacy in 842 and withdrew for a time to a life of study, before being called in 847 to the metropolitan see of Mainz as archbishop.

As archbishop of Mainz he presided over important synods, including the Council of Mainz in 848, which dealt among other matters with the predestinarian teaching of Gottschalk of Orbais, and he continued to write, especially biblical exegesis and pastoral works. He remained a supporter of Louis the German in the divisions of the Carolingian realm after the Treaty of Verdun. Rabanus died on 4 February 856 at Winkel in the Rheingau and was buried in the monastery of Saint Alban near Mainz. He was venerated locally as a saint from an early date; his feast is kept on 4 February. Although he was never the subject of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval type, his cult was established in the churches of Germany and among the Benedictines, and he is commemorated as a saint or blessed in Catholic tradition.

His intellectual legacy lies in the transmission and organization of patristic and classical learning for a Frankish clerical audience. De rerum naturis, drawing heavily on Isidore of Seville and other earlier authorities, served as a major medieval encyclopaedia. His biblical commentaries, though largely compilatory, shaped the study of Scripture in the ninth and tenth centuries. The hymn Veni Creator Spiritus has traditionally been ascribed to him, though modern scholarship regards the attribution as uncertain. Through his pupils and his books, Rabanus helped to root the Carolingian educational programme in the German-speaking lands of the empire, which accounts for the enduring title Praeceptor Germaniae.
