Biography

Short Description

Radim, known in religion as Gaudentius (Czech: Radim; Polish: Radzim Gaudenty), was a Bohemian churchman of the late tenth and early eleventh centuries and the first metropolitan archbishop of Gniezno. He belonged to the Slavník dynasty, a powerful princely family whose seat was at Libice nad Cidlinou in eastern Bohemia. He was a half-brother of Saint Adalbert of Prague (Vojtěch), bishop of Prague and later missionary martyr. Their father was Prince Slavník; Adalbert’s mother was Střezislava, while Radim was born of another union, which is why the sources describe him as Adalbert’s half-brother. The exact year of Radim’s birth is not preserved in contemporary records. In 995 most of the Slavník family was massacred at Libice by forces associated with the rival Přemyslid dynasty. Radim escaped that destruction because he was already abroad with Adalbert.

When Adalbert left the see of Prague and travelled to Italy, Radim went with him. In Rome the two entered the Benedictine monastery of Saints Boniface and Alexius on the Aventine Hill. There Radim took the monastic name Gaudentius. He remained Adalbert’s closest companion. In 997 he accompanied Adalbert on the missionary journey to the Old Prussians along the Baltic. Adalbert was killed there; Gaudentius survived the expedition. He subsequently took part in the recovery of Adalbert’s body. Duke Bolesław I of Poland (Bolesław Chrobry) obtained the relics, which were brought to Gniezno and became the focus of an important cult. Gaudentius’s eyewitness status and kinship with the martyr made him a natural figure in the organization of that cult and of the Polish church.

In March 1000 Emperor Otto III visited Bolesław at Gniezno in the famous Congress of Gniezno. Out of that meeting came the erection of an independent Polish ecclesiastical province, with Gniezno as its metropolitan see and suffragan bishoprics at Kraków, Wrocław, and Kołobrzeg. Gaudentius was installed as the first Archbishop of Gniezno. The new arrangement removed Polish dioceses from the claims of the German see of Magdeburg and gave the Piast state a lasting Latin-rite hierarchy. Contemporary narrative detail about Gaudentius’s years as archbishop is meagre; later medieval writers remembered him chiefly as Adalbert’s brother and as the first occupant of the Gniezno metropolitan throne.

Neither the date nor the place of Gaudentius’s death is securely documented. Later traditions have assigned his death to the early eleventh century, with proposed years such as 1006 or about 1020, but these figures are not confirmed by strictly contemporary evidence. He has long been venerated as a saint in Bohemia and in Poland, especially at Gniezno and in connection with the cult of Saint Adalbert. No record survives of a formal papal canonization of the kind that became standard in later centuries; his cult, like that of many saints of his age, grew by local liturgical custom. Historical knowledge of his life depends mainly on the hagiography of Adalbert, on brief notices related to the Congress of Gniezno, and on later Polish and Bohemian tradition.
