Biography

Short Description

Radolt of Verona, known in Latin as Ratoldus (also Radoldus or Ratold) and in German as Radolt von Verona, was a bishop of Verona in the Carolingian Kingdom of Italy during the first half of the ninth century and is venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church. He came from a noble Alemannic family. Alemannia was the Frankish duchy covering much of what is now southwestern Germany, northern Switzerland, and neighbouring districts; the exact place and year of his birth are not preserved in any source that can be verified. His career belongs to the generation of transalpine clerics who, after Charlemagne’s conquest of the Lombard kingdom in the late eighth century, were appointed to Italian sees in order to bind those churches more closely to the Frankish court and to Carolingian ecclesiastical norms. Nothing reliable is known of his childhood or schooling, though men of his rank typically passed through cathedral or monastic schools and the itinerant court chapel.

Radolt occupied the bishopric of Verona from the early ninth century until his death. Later tradition often places the beginning of his episcopate around 802, in the last years of Charlemagne or at the opening of the reign of Louis the Pious; contemporary documentation attests him as bishop across the following decades. Verona was an ancient Christian city whose most celebrated earlier bishop was Saint Zeno. Radolt is associated with the promotion of Zeno’s cult and with the ninth-century church of San Zeno outside the walls, the predecessor of the later Romanesque basilica. In common with other Carolingian bishops he would have been responsible for diocesan property, the maintenance of clergy, and care of the poor; some later notices credit him with charitable work such as a hospice, though the details are sparse. Politically he formed part of the Italian episcopate loyal to Louis the Pious. During the rebellions of the emperor’s sons in the 830s, Italian bishops were drawn into the conflict, and Radolt is counted among those who remained on the imperial side.

He died in Verona in 840. The liturgical tradition of the diocese of Verona and of churches in the German-speaking lands that remembered his Alemannic origin places his feast on 13 September. He was honoured as a saint by local episcopal and popular cult rather than by a formal papal canonization of the kind that became usual in later centuries. No substantial contemporary vita survives. Historians therefore reconstruct his life from charters, scattered references in Carolingian political narrative, and liturgical calendars. Because of this, many aspects of his personality, the full range of his pastoral acts, his burial church, and the precise circumstances of his death remain unknown.

Radolt’s historical importance lies less in a cycle of miracle stories than in his place at the intersection of Alemannic nobility, the Carolingian imperial church, and the old episcopal city of Verona. He illustrates how Frankish and Alemannic aristocrats staffed Italian bishoprics in the ninth century and how those bishops in turn fostered local saints’ cults such as that of Zeno. His veneration continued in Verona and was noted in some German martyrologies, but he did not become a widely invoked patron of particular trades, illnesses, or places beyond the honour paid to a holy bishop. Modern scholarship treats him as a documented Carolingian bishop whose sanctity is a matter of traditional local cult, while remaining cautious about legendary elaborations that cannot be traced to early evidence.
