Biography

Rafaela Ybarra de Vilallonga was born on 16 January 1843 in Bilbao, in the Basque Country of Spain, into the prominent Ybarra family. She was known in full as Rafaela María de la Concepción Ybarra Arambarri and was raised in a wealthy Catholic household that gave her a solid religious education. In 1861 she married José de Vilallonga y Gipuló. The couple had seven children, and she took her duties as wife and mother seriously while cultivating a deep interior life marked by frequent reception of the sacraments and a particular devotion to the Guardian Angels.

Nineteenth-century Bilbao was undergoing rapid industrial growth, and Ybarra became aware of the precarious situation of many young women who worked in factories and lived far from family protection. She responded by organizing charitable works that provided lodging, instruction, and honest employment. These initiatives reflected both her social concern and her conviction that Christian formation was essential to the dignity of working girls. She financed and directed schools and residences intended to keep young women from moral and economic exploitation in the industrial city.

In 1894 she established the Institute of the Sisters of the Holy Guardian Angels (Hermanas de los Santos Ángeles Custodios), a religious congregation whose apostolate was the Christian education and safeguarding of girls and young women, particularly those of the working class. The foundation grew out of her earlier charitable institutions and received the support of local church authorities. After she was widowed she gave herself still more completely to the new community and to the young people it served. She died in Bilbao on 23 February 1900.

The cause for her beatification was later introduced. Pope John Paul II beatified her on 30 September 1984 in Saint Peter's Square at the Vatican. The Catholic Church commemorates Blessed Rafaela Ybarra de Vilallonga on 23 February. She has not been canonized. The congregation she founded has continued its work in education and the care of young women.
