Biography

Short Description

Sainte Ragenufle d'Incourt, whose name also appears in the forms Ragenufla, Ragenulfe and Ragenofle, is a virgin saint of the Merovingian period venerated in the village of Incourt in Walloon Brabant, in present-day Belgium. Almost nothing about her can be established from contemporary written sources. No vita written near her own time has survived, and she does not appear in the major early martyrologies. Knowledge of her rests on later local tradition, brief notices in diocesan calendars, and the persistence of a cult at Incourt itself. Historians therefore treat the details of her biography as legendary, while accepting that a holy woman of that name was commemorated in the locality from an early date. She is customarily assigned to the seventh century, an era in which numerous noblewomen in the Frankish territories of the Low Countries embraced lives of consecrated virginity, either in monasteries or as recluses.

According to the traditional narrative preserved at Incourt, Ragenufle was born of a noble family in or near the village. From childhood she desired to belong entirely to God and to remain a virgin. When her relatives arranged a marriage against her will, she left her home secretly and took up a solitary life in a wooded district not far from Incourt. There she lived in prayer, fasting and penance. Popular legend credits her with a miracle in which a spring of water burst forth at her prayer or at the touch of her staff; the spring later became a focus of local devotion. She is said to have died while still young, remaining faithful to her vow of virginity.

After her death the inhabitants of Incourt buried her in their village. A cult formed around her tomb. In subsequent centuries a chapel was erected in her honour, and her relics were kept in the parish church. Pilgrims visited the site, and the waters of the spring associated with her were regarded as beneficial. The veneration of Ragenufle remained essentially a local phenomenon, typical of many rural saints of early medieval Belgium whose memory was maintained by parish communities rather than by great abbeys. No papal canonization in the later, centralized sense ever took place; her status as a saint rests on immemorial cult.

In the liturgical tradition of the region her feast has been kept on 14 July. She is regarded as a patron of Incourt. Beyond these elements of local hagiography, modern historical scholarship can add little. The figure of Ragenufle belongs to the large company of Merovingian holy virgins whose lives were shaped by the tension between family strategies of marriage and the ideal of consecrated celibacy, and whose cults helped to sacralize particular landscapes in the early medieval Low Countries.
