Biography

Short Description

Ragnhild of Tälje (Swedish: Ragnhild av Tälje, also S:ta Ragnhild) is a locally venerated medieval saint whose cult is attested in late medieval Sweden and whose name is bound to Tälje, the earlier name of Södertälje in Södermanland. Almost nothing about her can be established from sources close to the eleventh or twelfth century, the period to which later tradition assigns her. The earliest clear evidence of her veneration belongs to the fifteenth century. Historians therefore treat her as a figure known through a late legend, through church dedications and images, and through civic memory, rather than through a contemporary biography.

A legend written down in the fifteenth century presents Ragnhild as a queen of Sweden who made a pilgrimage to Rome and to the Holy Land. Later writers have sometimes identified her with the wife of King Inge the Elder (died around 1110), a woman more often named Helena in the narrative sources, or alternatively with a consort of King Inge the Younger. Neither identification is secure, and modern scholarship generally leaves her royal identity uncertain. In art she appears as a crowned woman, often holding a model of a church as a foundress or a pilgrim’s staff, combining the two roles the legend gives her: pious queen and pilgrim.

The centre of the cult was the church at Tälje, later rebuilt and known as Sankt Ragnhilds kyrka in Södertälje. Tradition holds that she was buried there. A fifteenth-century wooden statue of her survives, and she is depicted in murals and other church art in Södermanland and nearby provinces. Södertälje took her image for its coat of arms, showing her as a queen, and she is regarded as the city’s patron saint. She was never the object of a papal canonization; like many Scandinavian saints of the earlier Middle Ages, she was honoured by popular and diocesan custom rather than by a formal process in Rome.

Because the written legend is late and eleventh- or twelfth-century documentation is lacking, the historical Ragnhild—if she corresponds to a single historical person—cannot be dated or placed with precision. She is conventionally assigned to the eleventh or twelfth century only on the strength of the later royal identifications. No reliable year of birth or death has been preserved, nor a verified birthplace. What can be said with confidence is that by the later Middle Ages a saint named Ragnhild was honoured at Tälje, that her iconography joined royal and pilgrim attributes, and that her memory has continued in Södertälje through the parish church dedication and the civic arms.
