Biography

Short Description

Ramwod, whose name also appears as Ramwold, Ramuold, and Ranuold, was a Benedictine monk and abbot in the German lands of the tenth century. Later tradition places his origin in Trier, then a major ecclesiastical city in Lotharingia, and states that he was formed as a monk at the abbey of Saint Maximin there. Saint Maximin belonged to the Lotharingian reform current related to Gorze, which sought to restore Benedictine common life, liturgy, and discipline after a period of secular encroachment on monasteries. Almost nothing else can be verified about his family, birth date, or early career. No substantial contemporary vita survives, and the outline of his life depends on the memory of the houses with which he was connected and on later medieval notices.

In the last quarter of the tenth century he was called to Bavaria by Wolfgang, bishop of Regensburg from 972 and himself a promoter of monastic renewal. Wolfgang made Ramwod abbot of Saint Emmeram, the ancient monastery beside the episcopal city, an imperial abbey long tied to the bishops of Regensburg. The appointment is generally placed in the mid-970s and formed part of Wolfgang’s effort to regularize the convent and to distinguish monastic from episcopal property and life. As abbot, Ramwod is associated with introducing the stricter customs of the Gorze–Trier tradition at Saint Emmeram and with a revival of observance at a house that was both a spiritual community and a political and economic institution of the Ottonian realm.

In old age Ramwod took up the life of a recluse in a cell attached to the monastery, remaining a spiritual authority for the community while living in enclosure and austerity. Medieval tradition at Saint Emmeram remembered him as an ascetic man of prayer. He died at Regensburg on 17 June, in the year 1000 according to the date long current in German hagiographical and historical literature (some modern notices give 1001). He was buried at his abbey. The crypt at Saint Emmeram later called the Ramwold crypt belongs to the architectural and cultic memory of the house; how far the standing fabric reflects building in his own abbacy is a question of architectural history rather than a fully documented episode of his biography.

After his death Ramwod was venerated as a saint at Saint Emmeram and in the diocese of Regensburg. His feast is 17 June, the traditional day of his death. The cult is of the older local monastic and diocesan kind; there is no record of a papal canonization or beatification of the later formal type. He is not widely invoked as patron of particular places, professions, or causes beyond the historical orbit of his abbey. The written evidence for his life remains thin, and later ages knew him chiefly through the self-understanding of Saint Emmeram and through the linked hagiography of Saint Wolfgang rather than through a rich contemporary dossier.
