Biography

Short Description

The given name Ranulph (also written Ranulf, Randulf, Ralph, and in Latin Ranulphus or Radulfus) is a Norman form of a Germanic name meaning roughly counsel-wolf. After the Norman Conquest it was common among the Anglo-Norman nobility, royal administrators, and clergy. The request supplies no surname, diocese, century, Wikidata identifier, or other unique marker. Because many medieval men bore this name, no single biography can be verified as the intended subject, and precise personal data cannot be assigned without guessing.

Among historically documented bearers, Ranulf Higden was a Benedictine monk of Saint Werburgh’s Abbey at Chester in the fourteenth century and the author of the widely copied universal chronicle known as the Polychronicon. Ranulf de Glanvill died in 1190 while on crusade; he had been justiciar of England under Henry II and is associated with the early common-law treatise Tractatus de legibus et consuetudinibus regni Angliae. Several successive Earls of Chester were named Ranulf, including Ranulf le Meschin, who died in 1129, and Ranulf de Blondeville, who died in 1232. Ranulf Flambard, bishop of Durham, died in 1128. None of these identifications can be shown to be the person meant here.

Hagiographical calendars and martyrologies do not present a universally recognized canonized saint under the bare name Ranulph with an agreed feast, patronage, or cult. English Ralph and French Raoul or Renaud sometimes overlap in later spelling, but those are different dossiers (for example Ralph of Bourges in the ninth century, or other local figures) and cannot be merged with an unspecified Ranulph. No Bishop of Rome and no patriarch or catholicos of an Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, Coptic, or Church of the East see is recorded under this name.

Birth year, death year, places of birth and death, burial, religious order, marriage, children, feast day, patronages, and acts of beatification or canonization therefore remain unknown for this subject. Filling those fields would require choosing one Ranulph among many, which the available information does not permit.
