Biography

Short Description

Raymond of Fitero, known in Spanish as San Raimundo de Fitero and sometimes called Raimundo Sierra, was a Cistercian monk of the twelfth century whose early life is poorly documented. Later traditions assign him a birthplace either at Barcelona in the Crown of Aragon or at Saint-Gaudens in Gascony, but neither claim is supported by contemporary evidence, and his year of birth is unknown. He entered the Cistercian Order and rose to become abbot of the monastery of Santa María de Fitero in Navarre, a daughter house of the abbey of l'Escaladieu in Gascony. Fitero itself had been established in the mid-twelfth century as part of the Cistercian expansion into the Iberian kingdoms.

In 1158 the fortress of Calatrava la Vieja, a key stronghold on the Guadiana River guarding the approaches to Toledo, was relinquished by the Knights Templar, who judged it too exposed to an anticipated Almohad campaign. King Sancho III of Castile thereupon offered the castle and its lands to anyone who would undertake its defense. Diego Velázquez, a former Castilian knight who had taken the Cistercian habit at Fitero and who was acquainted with the military situation, persuaded Abbot Raymond to accept the royal grant. Raymond went to Toledo, received Calatrava from the king, and, together with Velázquez, raised a substantial force of volunteers from the city and the Tagus valley. The successful holding of the fortress that year is conventionally dated as the foundation of the Order of Calatrava, the earliest of the native Iberian military orders.

The new community combined Cistercian liturgical and monastic observance with the armed defense of the Castilian frontier. Monks from Fitero formed the clerical nucleus, while lay knights constituted the military arm; the order was placed under Cistercian affiliation and later received papal recognition. Raymond is regarded as the founder and first superior of the brotherhood. After the initial organization he appears to have withdrawn from day-to-day military leadership, leaving the knights under other commanders while the Cistercian character of the institution was preserved.

Raymond died in 1163 at Ciruelos, a locality in the region of Toledo associated with a house of the order. He was buried there. A liturgical cult developed around him in Spain, especially among the knights and houses of Calatrava, and he came to be venerated as a saint. His feast is observed on 1 February. No record survives of a formal papal canonization of the type that became standard in later centuries; his sanctity was acknowledged through local veneration and eventual inclusion in martyrologies and calendars of the Cistercian and Calatravan traditions.
