Biography

Short Description

Raymond the Palmer, known in Italian as Raimondo Palmerio or Raymond Palmario, was a twelfth-century layman of Piacenza whose life of pilgrimage and charity led to his veneration as a saint in the Roman Catholic Church. He was born in Piacenza, in the Po valley of northern Italy, around the middle of the twelfth century. Traditional accounts name his father Gualterio and describe him as a cobbler; Raymond was trained in the same craft. He married in his youth and had five children. The deaths of his wife and of all five children, events recorded in the medieval life of the saint, prompted him to renounce ordinary domestic and commercial life. He distributed what property remained to him among the poor and adopted the life of a pilgrim.

Raymond’s principal journey was to the Holy Land. He visited Jerusalem and the other holy places of Palestine, a pilgrimage that in the twelfth century was both arduous and dangerous. From the custom of returning pilgrims who carried palm branches as tokens of their visit to the Holy Land, he received the name Palmer or Palmerio. After his return from the East he undertook further pilgrimages to the tombs of the apostles, traveling to Rome and to Santiago de Compostela in northwestern Spain. These journeys situate him within the great age of medieval pilgrimage, when men and women from the Italian communes and from across Latin Christendom sought the holy places of Palestine and the apostolic shrines of the West.

When his long travels were completed, Raymond settled once more in Piacenza. The city stood on the Via Francigena, the main overland route used by pilgrims going to and from Rome, and it was therefore a natural place in which to care for travelers. According to the traditional narrative, he founded a hospice dedicated to the Twelve Apostles, intended to receive pilgrims, the sick, and the poor. He lived in poverty and personally served those who came to the hospice. His reputation in Piacenza rested on this combination of austerity and practical charity rather than on ecclesiastical office; he remained a layman and did not enter a religious order. He died in Piacenza on 26 July 1200.

After his death Raymond was buried in Piacenza, in the church associated with the hospice he had established, a church that later bore his name. A local cult developed around his tomb. He was never the object of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval or modern type, but he was commemorated as a saint in Piacenza and was eventually entered in the Roman Martyrology, which keeps his feast on 28 July. Raymond the Palmer is thus remembered as a figure of lay holiness: a craftsman and widower of communal Italy who turned bereavement into a life of pilgrimage and of service to pilgrims and the poor.
