Biography

Short Description

Redemptus of the Cross was born Tomás Rodrigues da Cunha on 15 March 1598 at Paredes in the Kingdom of Portugal. Little is recorded of his childhood or family. As a young man he entered the service of the Portuguese Crown and was sent to Portuguese India, where he served as a soldier. While stationed in Goa he came into contact with the Discalced Carmelites, who had established a house there as part of the Teresian reform. Feeling a call to religious life, he left military service and entered the order as a lay brother, taking the name Redemptus of the Cross (Portuguese: Redento da Cruz). He was not ordained; his vocation was that of a converse brother, combining manual work with the contemplative discipline of Carmel.

In Goa he lived the ordinary life of a Discalced Carmelite lay brother. In 1638 he was chosen to accompany the priest Denis of the Nativity on a Portuguese diplomatic and commercial embassy to the court of the Sultan of Aceh, on the northern tip of Sumatra. Denis of the Nativity, born Pierre Berthelot at Honfleur in France, had been a cartographer and naval pilot in French and later Portuguese service before entering the same order; his knowledge of navigation and languages made him a natural chaplain and adviser to the mission. Brother Redemptus went as his companion. The embassy took place against a long background of hostility between the Portuguese Estado da Índia and the Aceh Sultanate, a Muslim power that had repeatedly warred with Portuguese Malacca and other holdings in the region.

After the party reached Aceh, Sultan Iskandar Thani, who ruled from 1636 to 1641, ordered the seizure of the Portuguese delegates. The two Carmelites were imprisoned and pressed to renounce Christianity and accept Islam. Contemporary notices and later Carmelite accounts state that they refused. They remained in captivity for a time and were subjected to ill-treatment. On 27 November 1638 both men were put to death in Aceh for their faith. They have been venerated since as martyrs of the Discalced Carmelite missions in Asia. Surviving documentation of Redemptus’s early life is sparse, as is typical for a seventeenth-century lay brother whose public role was modest until the events of his death; the core facts of his Portuguese origin, his profession in Goa, his journey to Aceh with Denis of the Nativity, and his martyrdom there in 1638 are consistently reported in Carmelite and Catholic historical sources.

Pope Leo XIII beatified Redemptus of the Cross and Denis of the Nativity together on 10 June 1900 in Saint Peter’s Basilica. Their memorial is kept on 29 November in the liturgical calendar of the Discalced Carmelites. Redemptus has not been canonized and is venerated as Blessed. No well-attested burial place or recovered relics are recorded in standard sources, and he is not widely cited as patron of particular places, professions, or causes beyond his place in Carmelite martyrology.
