Biography

Short Description

Regina Protmann was born in 1552 in Braunsberg (present-day Braniewo), a town in the Prince-Bishopric of Warmia in Royal Prussia, then under the Crown of the Kingdom of Poland. She came from a prosperous burgher family; her father was a merchant, and the household was able to give her an education that was relatively uncommon for women of her station and region. Sixteenth-century Warmia remained a Catholic territory after neighboring Prussian lands had accepted the Reformation, and it was also repeatedly struck by epidemic disease, poverty, and the social strains of the post-Reformation decades. Those conditions formed the setting of her later work.

Around 1571, at about nineteen years of age, she left her parental home against her parents' wishes in order to live a consecrated life of prayer and service. With two companions she began a small community devoted to nursing the sick in their own houses, assisting the dying, and offering elementary instruction to girls. That group became the nucleus of the Congregation of the Sisters of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, known in German as the Katharinenschwestern. The community joined contemplative religious practice to active works of mercy, an unusual combination for women religious in that time and place. Protmann and her sisters cared for victims of plague and other epidemics in Warmia and undertook the schooling of young women when formal education for girls was scarce.

Diocesan recognition followed in the early 1580s under Marcin Kromer, Bishop of Warmia (1579–1589). The sisters lived according to the Rule of Saint Augustine and took vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. Under Protmann's direction the congregation established houses in several Warmian towns, beginning with Braunsberg, and extended its work in nursing, hospital care, and the education of girls. She drafted statutes and oversaw the spiritual and practical formation of the sisters. Period accounts present her as combining personal austerity with organized charity, especially toward the poor and those suffering contagious disease.

Protmann died in Braunsberg on 18 January 1613. The congregation she founded endured the later partitions of Poland, nineteenth-century secularizations, and the upheavals of the twentieth century, and it continues in healthcare, education, and pastoral work in Europe and elsewhere. Pope John Paul II beatified her on 13 June 1999 in Warsaw during an apostolic visit to Poland, holding her up as an example of women's religious initiative and of service to the sick and to the education of women. She has not been canonized. Her liturgical memorial is kept on 18 January, the anniversary of her death.
